Add Media to Your Stuff in Springpad

Posted on 31st January, by katin in Using Springpad. 75 Comments

Did you know that any item in Springpad can include photos, videos and notes? Once you save something to Springpad, you’ll have the option to personalize it within Springpad.

Notes, links and files can help you organize research that you’ve done online.  When you’re considering buying a product, keep a list of the reviews you’ve read or upload coupons for something on your wishlist!

Photos and videos can help you remember details about the things you’ve saved: store images of recipes you’d like to try, or add a how-to video for a household maintenance project.

Here’s how it works:

  • Open an item in Springpad
  • On the web, click on News & Notes to get the following window:
  • On the mobile apps, you’ll see buttons to attach notes or media:

Types of things you can attach:

  • Notes – Add any text you like.
  • Links – Paste in a link and add a title/description (optional).
  • Photos – Paste in a link to a photo or upload one from your computer and add a description (optional).
  • Videos – Paste in a link from any video site like YouTube, Viddler or Vimeo. It doesn’t need to be an embed URL, just the link from your browser will work.
  • Files – Upload a file from your computer and give it a description (optional).

Common Questions
Is there a size limit to what can be added to Springpad?
Any uploaded photo or file must be less than 5MB.

Who can see the media and notes that I add?
Anything that you add can be marked Public or Private. Public items can have private notes and media that only you will see.

When people spring things from me, will the media & notes go along?

Kind of – anyone who follows or springs something from you will see your public media and notes in their system.

I seem to be having trouble uploading files after the update, everytime i click on “add a file” it creates an unnamed file and does not allow me to choose which file to upload.

  2. Confused says:

Can someone tell me where is “My Stuff?” By My Stuff, do you mean “All My Stuff?” Please reply!

  3. Ai says:

I could not find the way to upload a photo in Chrome browser (I do see such an option on my Ipod touch). Could you please tell me how I can upload a photo in Chrome?

    Thank you

  4. Lori says:

Wondering if I can import a number of doc, pdf, jpg files I have in a folder on my computer desktop to include them in a project notebook? Can I do this all at once or do I need to create a note for each one? Thanks, just getting started but so far really impressed!

    • brittni says:

Hi Lori – if you are using the Chrome Browser you can drag multiple files at a time on to the Board of a notebook, it will take a bit of time either way.

  5. Ai says:

    Thanks, Brittni,
I knew I could add a photo that way in Chrome browser. But it is different from how a photo can be added on the Iphone app. On Iphone, there is an option to add a photo as a note. As a result, the photo will show up in the main body of the note (in the text box).

But I am not sure if what you suggested is exactly equivalent because the photo will show up as a small thumbnail on the top left corner, as opposed to the main body of the note.

    Thank you again!

  6. Gotta be a Better Way says:

I’m using Firefox 3.6.13. I finally figured out that to add a file, I need to (1) Open a notebook, (2) Click the ‘Everything’ category on the left panel, (3) Click ‘Add a Note’ in the upper right corner, (4) Click ‘Why Don’t you Add Something’ at the bottom of the note, and then (5) Click the File tab in the Upper right corner of the small note screen that appears. My problem however, is that the File tab is not enabled so I’m unable to click it. Is there something I can change in my settings to get this to work? Or, is there another (perhaps more intuitive) way to upload files to a notebook? Any help provided would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hi Guys, I cannot for the life of me find the ‘media’ button to add an image to a note? Maybe I am having a display issue… Can you link a screenshot or something? Dragging images onto the board works fine.

Also, any plans for a stand-alone version? taking offline notes is the one feature that is preventing me from moving everything over.

    Many thanks.

    • brittni says:

@ryan – the notes and media section is at the bottom left of your screen when you are viewing the full page of a note, task, product or anything else.

@gottabeabetterway – Hmm… I’d like to investigate your issue some more, can you send me an email at brittni@springpartners.com with more info?

  8. ryan says:

ok, i got it…confusing that you need to add a ‘note’ to an existing note to get the option, but I see why this is the case.

great product, and seemingly excellent support. thanks

  9. neil says:

I cannot seem to upload images to Springpad. I’m using Mac OS X with Firefox 3.6. I try to drag and drop onto a board, but nothing happens. When adding a new item, I see all sorts of buttons for various types, but I do not see an image button. Inside of a note, there is a button to add an image, but it only lets me enter a web address. HELP!

    • brittni says:

Neil – use the Notes and News section when you create a new note on Springpad, you can upload that way. (Also for drag and drop on the board, try using Chrome)

A – You can add photos and notes to checklists on the mobile apps when you’re at the store, and you can add all types of attachments on the web, under the Notes and News section of the checklist.

  10. A says:

Is there a way to add things (links, address, photo etc) to an item on a checklist or shopping list? Or alternatively, can I add a photo of something I need at the grocery store to my grocery list?

  11. Chad says:

Hi I am using chrome browser. Is there anyway I can upload a picture from my computer and add as the main body of the note instead of a thumbnail in the comments area?

  12. Don Karstedt says:

Thanks to all of your comments, I finally figured out how to attach a PDF file to a note–thanks.

But it seems very cumbersome. Shouldn’t something like, “Attach File” be a top-level button?

  13. Oscar says:

I have got pictures of fragments of books, magazines, brochures etc attached to a note. It is a powerful way to catch information the trouble is that I can´t see anything because letter sizze is too little. I need zoom function to read into the photo!! in Springpad Android, that would be great.

  14. ata says:

This feature is buggy. I have a public note with public media attached (all little “lock” icons are unlocked), but only the note shows up to people besides myself. The pictures are invisible.

Strangely, they could see the pictures a few days ago.

  15. Bing says:

Ditto on the photo zoom feature – I’d love to use Springpad as a scrapbook but I can’t zoom in on the photos.

Also, I’ve found the speed for downloading pictures to be terribly slow (a 1.5mb image took 3-4 minutes to download over a strong 3G signal – all other websites were loading as normal). Is this something to do with Springpad’s servers?

  16. Bing says:

    Brittni,

Thanks, just tried it again and it’s much faster.

But I noticed Springpad on Android reloads the picture when I change the orientation of my phone from portrait to landscape even though the picture looks the same size. Doesn’t Springpad cache the image on the phone? It’s a bit of a waste of bandwidth.

Also for pictures, how about a full screen option, and zoom? (Zoom!), or at least the option to open the photo in the image viewer.

How do I upload a picture from my symbian SE phone?

  18. Michal says:

I am just getting through David Allen’s “Getting Things Done Fast” (recommend to everyone!) ==> springpad rocks as the list manager!!; gives everything I need and more. However, PLEASE!!! development guys ADD PHOTO ZOOM FUNCTIONALITY or at least link to the original android Gallery program so we can view the organized contents in full details. I planned to digitalize all my printed documents, invoices, etc. but it just seems waste of time without the ZOOM. Also the “add multiple photos” would be useful.

  19. chris says:

ive been emailing, dragging PDFs under 5mb using chrome, and cannot get it into the damn thing! frustrated please help??

  20. skrael says:

Same here. Took a photo of a verse my kid needed to memorise for school. However it is useless … I cant read it. No prob in Evernote… I use the Android app on a SGS2.

  21. skrael says:

    Btw I much prefer springpad.

  22. Milind says:

    Hello:

    Device = LG P100 Android 2.2

The application is great.. except that I cant enclose any photos. Once I say add media > photo .. it opens device camera and once photo is taken and i click on attach.. it fails and says that -

“oops there was an error accessing the photo you selected”. I get the same error if I have to enclose a photo already in my phone directory.

The application also says the error is logged.

On my device evernote works well for this aspect. I am able to send photos quickly.

    Please help me ..

    Thanks

  23. Dex says:

No picture zoom functionality? Really? What point is there for adding pictures to springpad if I can’t see what’s on them?

  24. Matt says:

I would like to use this service for my school work. However, the iphone app seems to have difficulty adding multiple photos to a single note. A functionality I need. It stays on the screen (saving photo). Could you please fix this?

  25. liddi says:

How do I add a file to a note using the iPad app. Seems I can only do this on my desktop.

Is it possible to add a checklist/task to a note (I regularly do minutes with associated tasks)

  26. Kat says:

Hey! Is there a way to take photos from your webcam directly from Springpad? It would make saving things a lot easier than scanning and uploading. :)

  27. Andreas says:

    Device = IdeosX3 Android 2.3
It works to attach existing photos to a note, but whenever I try to add a media note with a new photo, the camera opens, I take the photo but then nothing is attched. There is no error message. Is there something i missed?

  28. Geoff says:

I used to be able to copy/paste photos directly into the body of my note on Chrome, but that no longer works. I can attach a photo as a separate file to my note, but then even just trying to open the photo seems to take a long time. It makes it pretty useless for me.

With the photo in the body of the note, I could use the note as a template for something else, like an email. Just copy everything from the note and put it into my email program. THat had been working well for me.

Are you planning to restore that functionality?

  29. Joseph says:

I want to know how I can save a video link while surfing the net in Firefox. I have the Firefox extension imbedded and am happily saving websites etc to my notebooks by simply clicking the SpringPad icon in the Firefox tool bar and going following the process but the drop down menu does not allow clipping of or saving of videos?

    • katin says:

Joseph – currently the extensions save videos as bookmarks. You can paste the url for the video into the attachments for any other note, though. This is something we hope to improve in the future!

  30. PhilS says:

I uploaded an MP3 from my PC to Springpad. Is there a way to download that MP3 to my phone?

  31. Sander says:

Is there any reason why the files that you upload as being private are accessible by anyone who knows the link? Isn’t this security through obscurity?

  32. Walter says:

How do i delete an audio (or other) attachment to a note. I recorded some audio and attached it to a note, now want it gone.i cant see and ‘delete attachment’ button

    • katin says:

Walter – On the web app there is a little trash can next to the attachments. On the iOS app, swipe across the attachment. On the Android app, do a long-press on the attachment.

  33. Janet says:

I would like for pictures attached to or in a note to be sent when I email the note. Why does this note happen? Is there a way for me to make this happen?

  34. Wojtek says:

Hi, sorry to put it here but I didn’t find any better place.

Is there going to be zoom option in Android app? It’s hard to read anything on docs photos in notes.

  35. Wojtek says:

@katin thanks for your response! I’m looking forward to seeing it :-)

  36. sKrael says:

“Soon”?, katin? It’s been “soon” for AGES…. This is the one lacking feature that made me uninstall Springpad because if I can’t take a quick snapshot of a business card or something and still read it later then there’s no point. I have to use Evernote but as soon as you let us take pictures of notes/documents and have them able to be read later I am giving Springpad another shot…

  37. DoodLS says:

Adding photos to notes is great. On a PC I am able to add a Description – also great. On iPhone I am UNABLE to add a Description – not great. And on neither PC nor the iPhone am I able to edit the Description once added – so I better get it right the first time – would be an improvement.

  38. Paul says:

After a new test,it seems always impossible to add photos attachment on ICS android Tablets. That’s prevent me from migrate definitively from evernote.
Will this be correct soon ?

  39. haloszem says:

Hi! If I take a “photo note”, I cant see the whole picture, just part of it.. The full picture is in the right directory, but it is a little bit confusing not to see the whole picture in note view.
    And waiting for zooming, too.
Anyway your sofware is great, thanks. It helps a lot not to forget my small ideas :-)

  40. Mariah says:

Is there a way to actually download a video so that I can watch it when I’m offline? I use Google Chrome and see that there is an option to have my springpad stuff available offline and I am often in areas without internet access.

    • Devin says:

Hi Mariah – When you are offline, the photos/vids you save in Springpad from web links will not be accessible. However, if you upload a video file from your computer, you should be able to view that (since it is a file, not a link to a webpage). If you want to view a video from the internet while offline, you have to download the video file to your computer first.

  41. Robin says:

    Hi

Any plans to make it possible to use bigger attachments than 5mb in the near future? All my attachments are around 8 mb so I’m never able to save them :-(

    Best Regards
    Robin

  42. John says:

+1 to lifting the size restriction on files. I use Springpad extensively to organise my life and would prefer to be able to add larger files. I wouldn’d mind paying for the feature.

As I’m at it, I’d also prefer more control over the organisation of my Notebooks. I want to group certain Notebooks into different folders and be able to view my Notebooks in alphabetical order, not just by the date added (this must be possible but it’s obviously quite obscure).

    Thanks

    John

    • Devin says:

Hi John – Noted on the file size. We’ll definitely take that into consideration. Re: notebook organization, you can drag notebooks in any order you want right now. Don’t have notebook folders yet, but it’s becoming a popular request. You can change the way items within your notebooks are displayed by using the dropdown menu on the top right or by clicking the wrench icon next to the notebook title. I hope that helps! :)

  43. Robin says:

    Hi
Is it possible to drag tasks on to check lists? I have some tasks that I want to move to check lists and since every task contains links and notes it would be much easier for me just to drag them over the the check list instead of having to write them in again all from the start.

    Best Robin

    • Devin says:

Hi Robin – Unfortunately not. The items on checklists are slightly different than Tasks. They are list items that are part of a shopping list. Tasks are separate item types that cannot be added to checklists. This would be a useful feature, though. Thanks for bringing it up, and sorry we don’t offer this feature already!

  44. Andrey says:

Hello! How I can attach a video file in Android app? Or its possible by email only?

  45. Glenn Bennett says:

I am having a problem with my pics, I have added to a note on my Samsung Tablet, the pics show as the correct thumbnails in the note but when I try to open the pic it expands to a different picture altogether, one that is not part of the springpad note, it happens to be a random pic from my picture gallery. The notes open the correct pictures when I open them on my android phone and from my computer. I have uninstalled the app a few times but always the same results but just an issue on the tablet.

    Glenn

    • Devin says:

Hi Glenn – Sorry for the trouble! How did you add the photo? Did you add a photo to an existing note, or did you click Add a photo? When you added, did you take a new photo or add a photo from your existing gallery? Feel free to email me more info at devin@springpad.com. Thanks!

  46. Robin says:

    Nested Folders

Hi whats the status on nested notebooks (folders in folders). My desktop and projects are getting really cluttered now and I really need to sort my notebooks in folders or something similar to get it working. Me and all my friends using Springpad feels the same. Its the only thing that really is missing to make it 100% workable for us! If you guys could make this thing work we really can trash all our other note apps :-)

    Best
    Robin

    • Devin says:

Hi Robin – Thanks for checking in on this. Unfortunately, I don’t have an update right now, but will definitely let you know when we have a plan for this!
