Lots of new features, but what are we losing?

Tips and Tricks.

We’ve just announced a slew of improvements to Springpad, but we’ve also removed a few things. Hopefully, these changes will simplify your Springpad experience. Have thoughts? Let us know.

Adding details to your items
1. We’ve removed star ratings.
2. Notes, media & links have been consolidated. If you’d like to add links, photos, videos or files to any of your items, click on “Notes”.

Adding things to My Stuff
3. Importing a recipe is a little bit different. In My Stuff, click on Recipe on the right hand side, then paste a link into the bar at the top.
4. Adding a Business or Restaurant in a specific city is slightly different. In My Stuff, click on Business or Restaurant on the right hand side, and start to type the name of what you’d like to save. Then there will be a little box that will allow you to change the location.

For those of you who use Apps
5. The “App Drawer” is only available in the Apps section. This means that if you are trying to add items to Apps, you need to do so from the Apps section itself.
6. We’ve moved the App directory. If you’d like to add an App besides a new notebook, click on “or add another app” in the drawer

If you like to use Groups
7. Groups are now called Lists. Read more about Lists.
8. Groups/Lists no longer include an intro blurb.

Changes to the clipper
9. The default way to save something is now a bookmark, not a note.
10. The clipper no longer allows you to add directly to Apps. But, you can add to Lists.

What happened to the URLs (links) in my existing Notes? Many of my notes had links in the “Add URL” field, but they seem to be missing since you did the upgrade. Please tell me these can be restored!

  2. katin says:

@Karyn – We’ll look into it! Feel free to email me at katin@springpartners.com

  3. Vinicius says:

Adding notes, links and files in tasks have not become simplier, but instead more dificult. Please, restore the little note in the tasks. I use spring pad for group work and that little note was so handy.

  4. A-lo says:

I like the overall changes, but I definitely would like the star ratings back. It’s how I easily differentiate between favorites and OK items. Removing it will just force us to implement the star ratings using tags, which is less elegant.

  5. Donna says:

What happended to the “tag” feature?

    • Devin says:

Hi Donna – You can add tags by clicking on the item you want to edit then click on the tag icon located under the initial item details (next to the flag and ” “)

  6. Steve says:

I am wondering why the drag & drop (and clip) to apps feature is eliminated. That feature is a major part of my note organization method, and that is actually a major reason for me to use springpad.

Is there any chance this feature comes back?

  7. katin says:

Hey Steve – I’m not sure we’ll bring back these features, but we are working on making things easier for users who use Apps – like you.

To give you some insight, we removed some of the reference & integration with Apps as a way to simplify Springpad for most of our users. We have found that for most people, My Stuff is where they save things, not Apps.

In the meantime, can you attempt to organize in My Stuff, with tags, Lists & Saved searches? I’d love to hear your feedback.

But, we hear you loud & clear! Easily adding things to Apps is important to you.

  8. Karyn says:

Just want to chime in on what Steve said: I quickly found that Apps (especially Notebooks) were my preferred way to organize my information. I need to be able to move items from “My Stuff” to one or more Apps. I just noticed that the little drop-down menu on an item, saying which App(s) it’s associated with, is no longer there.

I’m still fairly new to Springpad, so there are probably a lot of different ways to organize information in here. But on the whole, I’d suggest keeping options flexible rather than narrowing them!

  9. Steve says:

    Katin:

Thank you for your response to my comment. I have been using the Apps feature very heavily. And yes, I have tried navigating in “My Stuff” and using the search and filter.

In my view, putting everything in one place (My Stuff), tag them, and use search/filter is a step backward. That was what I did when I used Google Notebook, which annoyed me and triggered my migration to Springpad.

Other than that… I like the enhancement to the web clipper, sending notes via email, and the interface.

  10. Vinicius says:

And about the little note in the bottom? hehe

  11. Eyal says:

    Hello,
I’m new to Springpad, and one of the things that I’ve immediately missed is the inability to reorder items on the list. if I want something to appear before the other, I need to think carefully before I add it. That is not very intuitive.
Another thing I think is an issue is the inability to add things from the My Stuff to the App(notebook). if I want something in the notebook I must create it in the notebook, another not very intuitive function.
Actually, it took me a while to even find the thing I was looking for, the notebook to organize my things, somewhat hidden, which is mainly why I’ve signed up.
Fixing those things would surely make Springpad more attractive.
    Thanks!

  12. katin says:

    Hi Eyal -

Thanks for letting us know that these things are important to you! I totally understand about adding things to notebooks.

Can you tell me more about the order in which things appear? I understand that in My Stuff & in lists you can’t currently drag & drop to reorder… But what is the example when you need to do this? Have you seen the Sorting by name, date, etc?

    katin@springpartners.com

  13. Eyal says:

    Hey, thanks for the reply.
An example for reordering would be prioritizing, i.e. I want to read this and that book first , or watch one movie before another.
It’s also great that Springpad has an iPhone app, but I couldn’t find an option to add items to a notebook, which hinders me from adding, for example, things I come up with for a project.
One more thing, in the notebook, any notes added to an item are not visible unless you’re entering the item, the My Stuff has an indication about attached notes.
I really believe that adding those options would greatly increase Springpad’s functionality.
    Thanks!

  14. Hangaku says:

    Hi
In my opinion, this new release is a big improvement. However, despite the main feature of Springpad was the capacity to take a piece of content and put it wherever you wanted, this is not happening now. How sad.
In one hand we have My Stuff and in the other hand we have My Apps, but they are not realated anymore. I could not find the reason of having things in My Stuff that I cannot move into My Apps. This way, we have the great Springpad splitted up into two parts.
My Stuff is now the main place to create content, but I don’t think users know at a first sight that things created in My Stuff can’t be sent to My Apps.
Please reconsider to connect again My Stuff with My Apps.
    Thanks a lot!

  15. Kaitlin says:

I second A-lo’s comment about wanting the star ratings back. That was a great feature, and I miss it!

  16. katin says:

We hear the request for star ratings loud & clear! Working on it…

Hangaku – We are working on ways to make it easier to add your stuff to an App. I agree with your point about users not realizing that the things they create in My Stuff can’t be sent to Apps. I hope that we’ll have an improvement for you in the coming weeks.

  17. Hangaku says:

Thanks for your answer! Hope to see new things soon :)

  18. Ishwari says:

I like all of these changes……Only thing I can think of is to bring the star system back….and if you can add a feature to import from evernote. I have over 2 gigs of notes there.

  19. Chris says:

I am trying to use Springpad on the web/iPhone (currently using Zenbe lists and Evernote).

Since Springpad web does not all tasks to be reordered by drag and drop, I cannot use the product, since drag and drop is THE NUMBER ONE FEATURE for me in any type of task or to-do list system.

Can this be brought back? Otherwise for me it cannot work.

  20. katin says:

Hey Chris – You can still drag & drop to reorder if you keep all of your tasks organized using a Notebook App.

  21. Dawn says:

what happened to the barcode scanner? I used it all the time and since the last update it’s gone. It saved a lot of time for me.

    • katin says:

Hi Dawn – the barcode scanner is no longer available on the iPhone app with iOS 3 due to a restriction from Apple. Sorry about that! If you upgrade to iOS 4 you’ll see it again.

  22. Drew Vogel says:

Please bring back the STAR ratings!

  23. Gabriel R. says:

I prefer SpringPad to Evernote and would love to migrate over, but there is no way to do that.
