Springpad for Android Update (1.0.7)

As Jason mentioned, we’re thrilled by the response to the Springpad Android app launch! You’ve kept us on our toes with some great feedback and fantastic assistance in trouble-shooting.

In the week since launch, we’ve released a bunch of incremental updates so if you haven’t yet, please head on over to the Android Market to update to the current 1.0.7 release.

Springpad for Android 1.0.7 is available today. Here’s whats new:

  • Searching My Stuff – You can now search your saved items via the search button while in Springpad.  Want to also search Springpad while running Android’s global search?  Go to Settings > Search > Searchable Items > Select Springpad
  • Links in notes – Previously, only links with an embedded anchor tags would be active. We now make active any url entered into a note
  • Editing a note – We previously supported tap-to-edit the body of a note, but that made the experience of tapping a link less than optimal.  We’ve replaced that interaction with a simple ‘edit’ button that can be found within the menu section.
  • Editing rich text notes – Springpad supports and has made improvements to basic markdown syntax to handle notes that are formatted in rich text (e.g. bold, italics etc).
  • Proper notification when a note is not editable – We’ve done our best to make all notes editable from the Android app, whether created from the web app, clipped from a website, or emailed in. But, certain times when the formatting is too extensive it’s not possible (i.e. html emails or website scrapes). In these circumstances, we now show you prompt which suggests attaching a note instead.
  • Sharing notes and bookmarks – You can now share public and private notes and bookmarks.  Sharing a note passes along the contents of the note, and sharing the bookmark passes along the url of the bookmark.
  • Stability improvements – We’ve addressed many common issues that have been reported, such as issues when your GPS is off, or certain issues when taking a photo. We’re actively reviewing error logs and will continue to roll in improvements as they come.

We’re working on some really exciting new features and improvements and can’t wait to share them with you! Your feedback from the Market, Get Satisfaction, Twitter and email to feedback@springpartners.com is playing a central role in helping us improve our app, so keep the ideas coming!

Just found Springpad a few months ago, but the Android app sealed the deal! I’m currently moving all my stuff from Evernote to Springpad!

  3. Jeff Chow says:

Fantastic! Glad you guys are enjoying the app

  4. Liz E. says:

Loving the Springpad Android app, as well as the web interface. One request—if possible, could you please give the Android app the ability to create a new list, rather that just allowing it to add items to an already existing one? That simple addition would dramatically increase the app’s functionality. Thanks!

  5. Bob says:

This looks like a nice app. I would love to see a reminder function.

  6. katin says:

Liz – We definitely plan to add List Management in a future version of the app.

  7. Wowww.. Its my firt time with SpringPad & Android APP…
I´m veryy surprisedd.. Your are the best!
    From now I´m fully user!!!
    Thanks for this great app!

  8. saraatje says:

It’s not on Android market place anymore :( …What happened?

  9. katin says:

Unfortunately, Springpad currently only supports Android phones running Android OS 2.0 and above. Sorry about that!

  10. saraatje says:

I’m running cyanogen…… which is 2.0 …I just don’t see it in the market place. You should have a download link on this website.

  11. Dee says:

iPhone update please! Any note I create or clip on the website isn’t properly formatted and almost unreadable on the iPhone app :(

  12. Ken says:

In your announcement here: http://springpadit.com/jjchow/note/springpadforandroidlaunches , you mention that “The app’s note-taking capabilities allow you to quickly set reminders and alerts no matter where you are.” I am still not clear how or where reminders can be set in the Android App. Is this information correct?

    –Ken

  13. Jeff Chow says:

@ken you’re right that was a bit of forward thinking wording from our marketing side. Currently, you can set alerts on tasks, events and standalone alarms in the web app. In our coming releases you’ll be able to globally set alerts for any item both from the web as well as on your android device. We’re looking towards having this functionality present in the coming months.

Hope this clarifies things and sorry about the confusion!

  14. kmf says:

Could you please make it work on smaller Android devices like the HTC Tattoo

  15. Vadim says:

+1 for HTC Tattoo – we need it so badly, because there is no good note taking app for Tattoo at all

  16. Luci says:

The app in my Nexus One has caused some force closing lately, and when I uninstalled it and then tried to re-install it again, I can’t find it in the market, not even with QR code scanning, please fix!

  17. Luci says:

Just an update: The app has reappeared in the market and re-install was successful. I think the sometimes force close of the android app is due to the constant automatic sync, it’d be great if the setting can allow us to choose sync interval periods (e.g. 5 mins, 15 mins, 1 hr, etc.) and methods (e.g. wifi only/all networks), and maybe also a manual sync button. Hope this suggestion can help.

  18. Tim says:

Would a future release includes support for unicode characters, in my case Chinese?

  19. katin says:

Hey all! Thanks for letting us know that you’d like the Android app for the Tattoo. We’ll see what we can do.

Luci – I’m glad things are working out for your. We’ll consider allowing for manual sync

Tim – We know about the Unicode issue & hope to resolve it soon! Sorry to make you wait.

  20. [...] Update: Read about the latest Springpad Android update here. [...]

  21. Andre says:

Great app!!! Will be better when sync with outlook notes and fix de text bugs… I don´t like the notes creation method: title and then the note… in outlook it´s simple. You type a note and the app automatically creates a title based on your firt line text.

    Let´s knockout Mobile Me!!
    :o )

  22. Oleg says:

Is it possible to authenticate with google account in android app?

  23. katin says:

    Hi Oleg –

Currently all authentication with Google accounts, needs to be done at Springpadit.com, where you’ll create a Springpad username & password to login on your Android device.

  24. Oleg says:

Yes! I understood that later that day :) But anyway, thanks for help.

  25. sebastian says:

Thanks for bringing this to the Android. Great little app!

  26. Scott says:

I’m new to springpad and can’t figure out how to get clipper for android x. Thank you.

  27. Joe says:

Android sealed the deal for me with SP. Love the fast sync and UI.

  28. Steve Horsley says:

I like the Android Springpad app but it needs some more features to make this truly an app that can replace all other note taking / to do list apps. All the things listed below are meant for the Android app. I seldom use my laptop for Springpad – most things are done on the go.

    1. Save a step – Make the my stuff button smaller and add a couple customizable buttons to go directly to your favorite categories. ie: shopping list, tasks, businesses etc…

    2. Sending – Right now unless I’m missing something, I can only email or text someone a “note”. This app would become very useful if I could do that from any category. Say for example I have a shopping list and while my wife is out I need her to pick some stuff up. I could then email or text her the list (NOT mark as public and share with the world). Same thing if I saved a great bottle of wine under the wine category.

    3. Editing – would like to be able to edit (once again from the Android app) any and all content of any thing saved under any category.

    4. Back up data to SD card – (I believe I’ve read your working on this)

    5. Tasks – I like the task category but any individual task should have an option of put in a master task list and only have the master task list be visible in my stuff. Ex: a list of tasks for work would go into a “Work Tasks” list and may contain many individual tasks but only “Work Tasks” would show up anywhere until it was pressed. Showing every individual task creates a large amount of clutter in My Stuff.

    6. Reminders – No note taking / to do list app is complete without the ability to add reminders. It would be nice to see a wide range of options here. Alarm, send to calendar as an event, email, pin a note to home screen or better yet the notification bar.

    7. Sorting – Would like the option of manually sorting lists and when you sort a list, to be able to leave springpad and when you return you it should open to the last sorted option you chose.

    8. A Spring It function for mobile phone.

I currently use Note Everything Pro and Springpad. Some of the things I really like about Springpad is the UI and the ability to add many notes and pics to any category including lists. That makes it nice when say for example you save a hotel to spring pad, you can add notes like what you thought of the hotel, rates, etc… and you can add multiple photos of the place and it’s all contained in that note. Note Everything has some great features such as being able to send anything to anyone you want (pics, notes, lists). It also has a cool list feature called durable notes that you can use for lists that you use over and over again like say a grocery list. I won’t go into detail on it here but maybe you could check it out and get some ideas to incorporate into your product. I’m holding on to Springpad with high hopes that some of these important features will be added. Thank You.

  29. Tim says:

Hey I just got this for the android and it’s already so much better than evernote (for one thing I can access my notes without internet access). However, is there a way to turn off automatic sync? I only have a 200 MB data plan and I don’t want this to keep syncing every time. Otherwise I’ll have to uninstall. Thanks!
