Welcome to the New Springpad

Tech Updates.

Today, we’re excited to announce major updates to the Springpad platform – better organization, improved ways to save and a unified experience across all clients.

Your Memory Platform
Our mission at Springpad is to be your personal memory platform – a single place to save things you want to remember, accessible wherever and whenever you need it. A platform that takes advantage of the always connected nature of the cloud to alert you to information important to you while also providing additional details to help you get things done.

In March, we took our first step in cloud-based memory by launching Springpad on the iPhone, and since then we’ve launched Springpad for Android and iPad, released the Chrome Extension and introduced Alerts. Our Springpad community has grown tenfold and we have seen extraordinary usage across all clients, as well as many passionate users who have given us amazing feedback to improve the Springpad experience.

We’ve learned a lot in the last nine months and have poured the feedback and learnings into today’s release.

Faster ways to save thoughts

From scanning a barcode when you’re at the store, to geolocating a restaurant you want to try, to jotting down a quick thought, Springpad’s goal is to give you the best approach to saving based on what you’re doing.

While having a myriad of save options is helpful, we’ve reduced the noise a bit by surfacing three primary ways to save: Notes, Tasks and Look it Up.

“Look it up” is a new way to save and is a central way to use the internet to add common things you hear about, like books, recipes, albums and movies. You can even add contacts from your Google or Facebook accounts. And as always, Springpad enhances that information with actionable links and widgets like price comparison, tour dates and wine availability.

Better organization

We’ve simplfied our approach to organization giving you two options, Notebooks and Tags.

Notebooks are places to save buckets in your life. Be it projects, plans or just work vs. home. The siloed experience gives you true focus. Tags lets you cross-reference information within a notebook or All My Stuff.

The Board: Visual Organization

We’re introducing a new way of organizing called the Board. The Board is your virtual cork board, where you can layout notes, photos, or anything in your Springpad and group them in ways that make sense to you. You can even add a map on the board to visualize anything in your notebook with an address. The board is available on HTML5 supported browsers as well as on the iPad.

Your personal corner in the cloud

We’re making the experience using Springpad even more personal by giving you the option to theme your Springpad. Choose a background theme for your Springpad, select binding colors for your notebooks. And best of all, themes and notebooks sync with your Android and iOS apps letting you take your personal experience with you.

Seamless experience cross-client

A big push for this release has been to make sure all clients (iOS, Android, Web) feel familiar, while also designed to take advantage of the various uses each client brings. All clients now support themes, tags, notebooks and also a simplified set of save options.

We’ve also taken this opportunity to address specific improvements within each client. Learn more about changes to your favorite app:
- Springpad HTML5 Web App
- Springpad for iPhone and iPad (v2.0)
- Springpad for Android (v2.0)

So much more to come
A big part of today’s release is positioning the platform to prepare for our next phase as a memory platform. From programatic interfaces, to deeper social integration, and of course, our constant push to keep simplifying the user experience, there’s much more to come.

We hope you enjoy today’s improvements and as always feel free to send us feedback!

Love the changes! Thanks so much for your hard work! (btw the links to iPhone/Android apps don’t work)

  2. jh says:

huge leap forward. thanks so much for all the work everyone at springpad has put into this.

  3. Hans says:

    Dear all,

I love the new version, it seems to be doing all I have done in some other “comparable” systems, like Evernote and Toodledo.

It is also extremely nice you updated every version, so the web, iOS and Android, which I am all using.

Will do a more thorough check and will let you know later, but first impressions are that is a great new version!

    Hans

  4. vihus says:

There is an error on froyo (htc desire): if pin is set, the application force closes when I try to access a notebook.

Except that, the application works flawlessly. You did an amazing job :D

  5. Jeff Chow says:

@vihus thanks for the heads up! we’re looking into the passcode issue and hope to get a fix in soon.

  6. Imparatus says:

Don’t remember ads in the last version.

    Ads = BAD.

    Probably will be dropping springpad.

  7. dp says:

Why is there no “send via email” option for notebooks? Also, the iPad app crashes to the desktop if you select the “previous alert” arrow from inside an alert. Just FYI…

Animated ads? Yuk. I would pay not to have those. You have jumped the shark on those ads. Time to reconsider paid version of Evernote.

  14. Davey says:

I had previously left Spring pad for Evernote but now i’m switching back. Great improvements guys!

  15. Arlo says:

Great update! Much cleaner, FASTER, better organized and less messy. Going to try using it again to organize my thoughts, projects, etc.

First little thing: small glitch in the CSS or something. http://i.imgur.com/Ce1YQ.png This is on a view of one of the notebooks, top left corner has some transparency issues. Chrome 8.0.552.200, Windows 7.

    Keep up the good work!

Looks great. My one complaint is that sharing a list or something with someone else isn’t automatically updated on their side. I would like to see that be better. Then it would be a great tool for me and my family.

    • brittni says:

@Jason some of our users find that sharing one account in a family is really helpful with this, that way changes always sync. You can have your own notebook in the account for each of you and share a community notebook. Just an idea!

Video very intriguing but she talks/moves too fast to keep up.

    Also, what is the cost?

  22. Imparatus says:

Guys, you really need to rethink the ads. A nominal fee for a no-ad version would help. Even STATIC ads wouldn’t be so disruptive, but those animated ads drive me crazy. I won’t use an app that contains animated ads no matter how good it is. Shame, it was better than evernote but I will take less functionality to get an app where advertising isn’t extremely intrusive.

  23. Imparatus says:

One more note, and I am not trying to be derisive, but if you are going to show as many screenshots as you do in this post, I think it’s disingenuous not to show the active advertising panel in ANY of them. I was surprised to see the ads even though I had read the post closely.

    Thanks for listening.

  24. Zuleika says:

You’ve done an absolutely fantastic job! I’ve finally been able to get rid of other note and task management apps, and now solely use springpad.
You can’t please everyone, but I can say that atleast I’m happy with it. Can’t wait to see what else you do! :-)

  25. Conway says:

I don’t intend to ‘follow’ anybody on Springpad. I really don’t need a spot for “Friends Stuff”. Please tell me there is a way to hide that square. I know you’re pushing that ‘social integration’ idea, but it’s just taking up space on my screen.

  26. CubeNinja says:

I can’t say enough about the improvements and updates. Job well done!!

  27. PJU says:

Ads must go! SpringPad is also now painfully, painfully slow!

I just started really using SpringPad before the change in the web app, and I was really getting to like it. Today, I log in for the first time since the web app update(yes I logged in online tech support people), and I cannot even transfer anything to notebooks without timing out after about 30 full seconds and then I get an error message. A long error message, so no, I cannot possibly remember it all to copy here for you. Having worked with SQL, I can say it looks like a database issue based on whatever database you may be using, but that is just a guess. If your back-end is having issues, that may be what is slowing down everything for SpringPad users, regardless of what function they are attempting to perform.

    Anyway, here are my specs:

FireFox 3.6.12 (extensions that may be of interest are AdBlock Plus and NoScript, however, loading a clean FF profile has not improved the SpringPad issue at all)

Windows Vista x64 (all cookies and cache faithfully dumped after each internet session using CCleaner)

Time of day is 12:30PM EST to 1PM EST for attempted SpringPad use

My SpringPad account is relatively empty, so it cannot be the size of my data that is an issue.

The SpringPad Clipper does NOT seem especially slow…about normal.

I had the extreme slowness issue with almost everything I did in SpringPad except changing my account settings and changing the background/theme photos.

Clicking on the “All My Stuff” button on my account homepage takes me swiftly to my page and swiftly loads my list, but after that, any attempts to work with my list are buggered by the slowness. Also, it appears that I should be able to re-size the frames within my page on SpringPad, but the ability to do so never appears if I hover my mouse over the individual lines. Since I have seen this issue on other websites when they experience slow-downs, I assume this is why this function is not working on SpringPad, but I wanted to pas it along. This function MUST work, because I cannot view my items properly down the left side of the screen if I an never re-size that area. THAT will cause me to chuck SpringPad even if the slowness issue is fixed.

Final thought…are your new ads slowing down the SpringPad performance? Do they run through the same servers? I hate ads and would be willing to pay for a version of SpringPad that is ad free, so consider that please. If the ads stay, even with my ability to use AdBlock, I may discontinue using SpringPad. I hate ad-driven apps. Yes, I know they are necessary to pay for services when people/users want to have free apps, but I am willing to pay a reasonable fee. Ads are distracting in the extreme. They detract from the attempt to bring order, which is the whole point of SpringPad. In addition, those ads install tracking cookies. That really irks the crap out of me.

    Please fix this issue asap.

  29. Amy says:

I really enjoy everything Springpad has to offer, but there are a couple of issues that are preventing full usability for me.

    1. I run version 2.1 on an iphone and I’ve found that items placed into notebooks on the web app don’t show up after syncing on the iphone app. I can see the item in All My Stuff but it doesn’t show up in the notebooks I created (althoigh the empty notebook itself is there).

    2. Using the web app, when I attempt to upload files from my computer I get an error notice that prevents the file from uploading.

Hopefully these bugs will be fixed soon or a workaround can be provided so I can continue using Springpad. Great work so far though!

  31. Jon M says:

The web app is painfully slow. I’m getting a 15 second delay every time I add a task. No matter how cool the concept of SpringPad is (and it is VERY cool), this will drive me away from using it – and quickly.

  32. Barbara says:

  34. Mark says:

I like the “board” feature. Here are some future enhancement suggestions, based on mindmapping techniques :
    1) allow connecting lines to be drawn between items
    2) allow changes to the background color of an item
Adding mindmap ability to Springpad would be amazing.
Adding enhancement 2 (add color to item) would be relatively easy, and I would suggest that as a first step.
