Tech Updates.

We are excited to offer Delicious users the ability to import their bookmarks into Springpad! You may already use Springpad as a place to save things you want to remember, but check out this quick guide on how importing your Delicious bookmarks will allow you to get even more out of Springpad’s sharing and organizing features.

What You Can Expect When Importing Your Bookmarks to Springpad:

  • One Springpad Bookmark will be created for each of your Delicious Bookmarks, with the title of the original bookmark and a link back to the source
  • Tags will be imported
  • Privacy settings on your bookmarks will be retained
  • If your Delicious bookmarks had notes populated, they will be imported into the bookmark description
  • A new notebook will be created, called ‘delicious’ with all of your bookmarks in it

How to Import Your Delicious Bookmarks to Springpad:

  1. Login to your Delicious account, then go to Settings -> Export / Backup Bookmarks to export your bookmarks. Springpad will import your tags & notes, so be sure to include them in your export.
  2. Log in to your Springpad from a computer browser or go here to create a new account
  3. Go to Settings/Services and scroll down to find Delicious
  4. Follow the instructions for uploading your Delicious bookmarks – You will be prompted when the upload is complete!

Sharing Your Bookmarks in Springpad:

  • Define a default privacy setting for all new bookmarks created
  • Share a list of your public bookmarks with a URL like this: http://springpadit.com/username/Bookmark
  • Follow your friends in Springpad & you’ll see their public stuff in Friends Stuff
  • Post anything you save to Facebook or Twitter by clicking on Share

Organizing Your Bookmarks in Springpad:

  • Add bookmarks to notebooks to organize by topic or project
  • Save other types of data alongside your bookmarks, like tasks, notes, restaurants & recipes (learn more about Springpad features)
  • View your notebooks by tag
  • Add/Remove tags on multiple items at once with Bulk Edit
  • Access your bookmarks on the web or on any of the Springpad mobile apps

How to Create New Bookmarks in Springpad:

  • Chrome Users: Install the Springpad Chrome Extension to clip any website you’d like to save
  • All Browsers: Use the Springpad Clipper to bookmark any website
  • Type them in: In the Springpad web app, select your bookmarks in the navigation, then hit + to type in a new one
  • “Share to Springpad” on Android: Once you’ve installed the Springpad Android app, you can share to Springpad from any other app on your device

This is not working at the moment, right?

  2. John S says:

This is awesome! Thank you…I was worried what I was going to do when I heard Delicious was being shut down. I now worry no more!

Hi, I just signed up to give Springboard a spin after that Yahoo Delicious scare. I’m looking for a viable alternative, and Springboard caught my eye, yet I’m not quite ready to make a full switch. As such, I have the following concerns and questions.

Your importer seems to disregard the ADD_DATE field in the bookmark file. Now I have an account full of bookmarks in a fairly random order. They would be so much more useful if the recent ones were at the top, especially when using them in conjunction with the browser extension. Why have an “added” sorting option otherwise?

    Two more questions:

    a) will you be using the Delicious API any time soon to have new bookmarks sync over automatically, and if not:
    b) will uploading a newer version of the bookmark file at a later date create duplicates of previously imported bookmarks or do you have a mechanism in place that will only add what is new or has changed?

    • brittni says:

Jerry – we don’t have a current plan to import date added with your delicious bookmarks, but would love to add it in the future! There are no plans for any delicious to springpad syncing, just the already implemented export/import function.

  4. Jerry says:

Of course, I meant SpringPAD. Sorry about that, it’s late.

  5. Jenny says:

I just tried it and it works great! All my delicious bookmarks are moved over to Springpad in a flash. Thanks Springpad team!

  6. Daidaros says:

    I cannot upload my bookmarks.

  7. Daidaros says:

Oh, now my bookmarks are working =)

  8. Bret says:

I’m kicking Springpad’s tires based on the obvious energy you guys are putting into attracting those of us emerging from the delicious.com diaspora. Some questions after looking at the imported bookmarks:

    * brittni: Is there any way we can get notified when importer handles dates properly so we’ll know when to try reimporting?
    * Is there any way to sort your tags alphabetically rather than by count of matches?
    * Is there any way to drill into tags using intersections the way I could on delicious, eg “amusing+animal+videos” or “howto+scm+tools”?
    * Are the tags listed next to an item useful in any way? You can click to delete a tag, but the rest of the tag text does nothing. (For example, clicking a tag should jump to that tag, or to start a tag intersection.)

    • brittni says:

Hi Bret – we’ll be sure to post here when that feature is available.
No way to sort tags but we are considering it for sure.
There is no tier system for tags either but it’s great idea that we’re also considering.
Totally agree on the last point (jumping to tags when it’s clicked) This feature is implemented in the Chrome Extension.

  9. Bret says:

A note of warning: Whether or not you’ve set that default privacy setting as described above, if you tell the importer to switch to using Springpad’s private/public settings before you import, you’ll start out with all of your bookmarks private rather than shared delicious.com-style. You can’t bulk-edit the privacy setting for all your bookmarks, nor can you delete them all to make reimporting better; can only do that one screenful at a time. The only solution I found was to delete my Springpad account and try again. :(

(Importing but ignoring Springpad’s privacy setting/keeping delicious.com’s settings works fine.)

  10. tanawana says:

with only 82 Delicious bookmarks, it has been procesing for about 4 hours now. Is this normal??

  11. Corey says:

I like to tweet websites that I find useful and interesting. Is there a way to bookmark and tweet at the same time?

  12. Brian says:

I have recently imported my delicious bookmarks and have a couple of questions:

    1. How do I use bulk edit to change the privacy settings on all of the bookmarks at once? They have come in set to private and since there are over 1,000 of them changing them one at a time would be a burden.

    2. How can I use an RSS feed of my bookmarks in my website? Delicious had an excellent feature that allows me to stream my bookmarks on a webpage.

    Thanks for your help,
    Brian

  13. Melissa says:

Is there an embed a cloud of tags to another website feature in Springpad?

    • brittni says:

Melissa – sorry no feature like this.
Brian – 1. can’t bulk edit privacy, sorry about that. 2. There’s no such RSS feed in springpad yet, sorry again.
Corey – you can share individual items by clicking the share button when you’re viewing your bookmark, you’ve got to make it public to share.
Tanawana – something’s definitely not right there, may need to log out and try again.

  14. RJ says:

Delicious importing NEEDS to include date stamp. That is IMPORTANT meta data that can be key for organisation, timeframing and checking outdated links. Some bookmarks relevancy can be lost with out the time context within which it was created.

    To Bryan,
Loved your tutorial it explains things quite well. Now I just have to wait until Springpad finishes importing. I had quite a lot of bookmarks (nearly 1000)

  21. Bryan Zimmerman says:

    To Lorena . .

Thank you for the kind words!

A thousand bookmarks will take considerably longer, however, it is well worth the wait! Let me know how you make out!

    Regards,
    Bryan

  22. Lorena says:

    To Bryan,
The import went great, it did take long, but everything I had is there now. No missing tags or descriptions. Now I’m working on organizing everything imported and doing a much needed tag maintenance. They were over 500 of them! I do wish Springpad had a better way to organize tags, but I can live with what they have, and so far love it.

  23. Bryan Zimmerman says:

    Lorena,

That is awesome news truly! I am glad it worked out for you, and yes, I too love SPRINGPAD!

I really need you help. I have spent hours organizing my springpad board, created folders for recipes, to do list, ect and when I have logged in today is is all lost!!
I am just about to cry for loosing everything. I don’t understand. This should be web based. When I log in should be synchronized.
Is there anything you can do to help me to get all my data back??
Please, help me out. Any suggestions?

    THanks a lot.

Any way to import browser bookmarks (specifically Chrome) into Springpad?

    • katin says:

John – Sorry there is not currently a way to import your local bookmarks directly into Springpad, unless you first import them to Delicious then to Springpad
