How to use Tags and Notebooks to Organize Your Stuff in Springpad
Springpad helps you save anything you want to remember, whether you come across it while you’re sitting at your computer, on your couch, or on the go. With the Springpad web app, mobile apps, and browser extension, it’s simple to save notes, tasks, recipes, products, books and much more. And once you save stuff to Springpad, it’s easy to organize it!
Use Notebooks to Organize by Project
Create a notebook in Springpad to give yourself a focused view of your stuff. Then, access that notebook & its contents on the web or on one of the Springpad mobile apps. Everything you add to a notebook will also be available in All My Stuff, which is… well, all your stuff!
Once you create a notebook, it will show up on your Springpad home screen:

To create a new notebook, click on the big + on the home screen on any of the Springpad apps.
How to add an item to a notebook:
- On the web app, add an item to a notebook by clicking on the little notebook icon. Then, you can jump to the notebook by clicking on its name. You can also add or remove an item from a notebook using bulk edit.
- On the mobile apps, first select an item then choose Add to Notebook from the menu.
Use the Board to Visually Organize within a Notebook
Every notebook has a section called the board, where you can lay out the items from that notebook however you like and move them around with drag & drop. The board is great for organizing creative projects like parties or redecoration, for managing recurring tasks like daily chores or weekly meal plans, or for mapping out a one-time project like a trip plan or a big meeting. Check out some other cool uses of the board.

The board is currently available on the web app (HTML5-enabled browsers) and the iPad app.
Use Tags to Categorize Your Stuff Across Notebooks
Just like lots of other apps, Springpad lets you categorize your stuff with your own custom tags. An item can have as many tags as you like, and those tags will be applied across all of your notebooks. If the note types that Springpad offers don’t fit your specific organizational needs, use tags to categorize your stuff within notebooks.

How to add a tag to an item:
- On the web app, add a tag by clicking on the little tag icon. You can then use the navigation on the left to view items by tag. You can also add or remove tags using bulk edit.
- On the mobile apps, first select an item then choose Add a Tag from the menu. If you would like to view items by tag, open My Stuff or a notebook, tap on the notebook header, then select the tag you’d like to view.

I’m a little confused by the new version of ‘All my stuff’. Whenever i go to that notebook i only see 22 items (i prefer the tiled large thumbnail third view option).
In the old version i could just go the next page and view the next set of items. I’m using Chrome and i can’t see any scrollbars, or ways to go through to the next page etc. The other two views present scrollbars, this third option shows nothing, for me at least. I’m assuming i’m missing something blindingly obvious.
Is there a limit on the amount of tags, which can be added in springpad?

Great app. Thank you.

Thanks for a great little tool!
OK, when I get into All My Stuff, the items on the left appear to filter what I see, though only one can be selected at a time, which is troubling. Initially, the All My Stuff item is selected, so I see everything. If I select Flagged stuff, I see flagged things; if I select Task, I see tasks. OK, cool. But I wanted to do fancier things, especially with my tags, such as seeing my Orders for Gear without also seeing Orders for Furniture or Support items for Gear. So, I want to see things that have both Order and Gear tags. Well, the items on the left don’t allow that, but then, at the top, there is Filter Results. This seems to allow most of what I need, though instead of being fully flexible, it seems to limit at times, applying some sort of unexplained logic to what can be selected. I can select two tags, like Order and Gear, but I can’t seem to select more than one Notebook; it is confusing. Also confusing is how the filter settings match up against the items on the left. If I filter by my Home tag and have the Neighborhood tag selected in the left column, what does it mean? That is, what should I see? Which governs? Maybe when filtering, the items on the left should be greyed out?
I second the time and date stamp with a toggle to choose what is seen.
Also…I did notice that if you put something in a folder of your choice and if it’s also in My Stuff and you delete it from My Stuff, it also deletes it from the chosen folder. I did this via a cell phone so not sure if I was doing it right or what.
Thanks.
Very much like to have the function of print board. pleaseee
I agree with Dianne. I initially put page clips in My Stuff folder then moved it to the new folder. I would like the page once moved from My Stuff to not stay in My Stuff. So now, if I delete it out of My Stuff it will delete it from the new folder! Can that be changed to whatever folder information is moved to it will not stay in the folder it was moved from. I would like my folders to have only the information I need in it.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
I think it would be great to be able to organize notebooks as folders or to be able to tag notebooks in order to put some order and classify them (Tags, up to now, are for items, not for notebooks, as fas as I know). Colors are not a good tool when you have a lot of notebooks.
Thanks a lot for this great tool.
Best
Hi. This application is great but there is one thing that lacks for me and I think it would be awesome if you guys could update it. I would love to have all my credit cards, ID, social security, Green Card, bank accounts, websites informations and passwords on this application like the “keeper” that cost $29 per year for android but springpad isn’t safe enough. I know that there’s public and private, but I’m talking about if I loose my phone or I get my phone stolen. Even if I’m signed out and the person sign in with my gmail account will sign in automatically. What I would like is an option to set up a password for a specific folder. Thank you
I am based in the UK and I have noticed the format of the telephone number is based on the US model. Any chance introducing a setting to avoid this? For instance you could ask for a country in the settings and if the answer is USA apply the format if not then no format is applied.
Thanks for this app which has great potential!
Kind regards
I agree with Eva. I would love to order my notebooks in folders in the web app and in my phone.
How do you delete a notebook?
OK – just discovered how to do it…!
more color options for the notebook headers, please!
how can i disable the ‘quck-edit’ mode?
problem: i open a note for reading / viewing. but clicking on the notes content switches to the edit mode! i only wanted to mark and copy a peace of text or follow an hyperlink! hyperlinks are completely unusable this way!how can i fix this?
That’s no good news!
I hope this issue will be fixed soon!
Can you please add a feature where I can drag bookmarks into notes. I have tons of bookmarks to import. I don’t want to create a note then have to go to the “add a note” section at the bottom to re-add all of the relevant links after importing the same bookmarks that can’t be added to notes. It’s easier to upload the bookmarks then drop them into each note that applies. It seems the only cross linking that can be done is dropping bookmarks, products, etc, in multiple notebooks. This is causing me to spend a lot of time adding the same links I already have in bookmarks. For instance, if I write a note about certain “products” and create the appropriate links underneath, I want to also put those same links in a note I may have on “shopping” or “what to buy” instead of having to re-create them for the third or fourth time in any relative note. This brings me back to my first point….being able to just drag and drop created items into ANY note.
Love Springpad but spending ENTIRELY too much time trying to organize ![]()

I’m kind of new to all this mobile stuff, I still only use my cell phone for making and receiving calls but this Springpad app which I downloaded to my ereader is the best app ever! Convenient, easy to use and pretty secure since I’m set to “private” and my ereader is password protected. Thanks
@Shirley I’m confused at what you want to do, so this may be way off base:
If I have a bookmark I want to save, I add it to my bookmarks notebook. If I want to mark it to be read later, I also add it to my ReadLater notebook. Similarly, if I have a bookmark to a product, I add it to both my bookmarks and my Shopping List notebooks. Is that what you are looking to do?
How do I save my title in Tasks? When I add a task on my [Android] phone, I can type out a title but there’s no way to save it. Hitting the back button is the only way out, I don’t see a ‘save’ button. The task gets added but it says ‘unnamed block’.
thanks,
Ricky
I really think that having notebook + tagging is too much to think when adding articles as notes!
I hope if notebooks have children tags that are related to them, so that any time I add a tag related to a notebook, it goes automatically there.
I also hope that adding notes with images gives the first image as a preview to the note automatically just like the clipper in bookmarks.
Thanks for the great app!
Firstly, great tool. I now use it daily.
I’d really like to tag the items we add to lists. Is that possible in the next upgrade?
Thanks again.
Also a date stamp when we check a task off as complete would be useful.
Thanks!

Hi guys,

I then check Springpad on my phone to make sure I did tag them etc. and they appear there fine (all in the correct notebook with the correct tag). Looking again on the Chrome app and one item has jumped into the correct place with the tag.
It seems I have to launch and close the phone app each time I add something in order for it to be correctly categorized in the Chrome app, for instance, if I add 5 items via the Share feature I have to launch and close Springpad on my phone 5 times for it to show correctly on the PC. I thought maybe there was a delay with syncing but this is not true. I have sometimes left it a couple of days but still get the same results. I’ve also tried logging out and back in, re starting my phone etc. but to no avail.
I don’t know if this is a wee bug I’ve come across or if it’s intentional but I thought you should know.
Cheers! Still a wonderful app.

I would love to use this for students to do a research project — type or copy/paste source cards and note cards using Springpad. I’m having trouble figuring out how students would print their note cards and source cards, though, so I may grade them. Help, please?
I had wanted students to do their research projects using Springpad because of the board. They could take their notes and drag and drop them in the order of their oultines. However, an upgrade to a different browser is required, and I don’t have the authority to do that in our school’s network. Any way to work around that?
Can we edit tags — that is, change an individual tag label and/or combine different tags? There might be an easy way to do this, but I’m a new springer and not finding it so far. Thanks –
I love the tags feature. One problem I have with Springpad is that it seems that you can’t have tags sorted alphabetically. When I want to find something based on its tag, I know what the tag is. I do not know how many time I used it.
My notebooks will not open. No matter if i log out and refresh the page.
if I have one task todo it shows all past this is confusing are there hidden info that I cant access? this goes for notes etc aswell or is this a bug?
I know I’ve complained before, but it is still SLOWSLOWSLOW. Launching the extension from Chrome (which half the time doesn’t work at all) and on my android. It is so clever and would replace several other apps but its functionality has to improve.
Today I tried clipping from Chrome and it just completely crapped out, which is not unusual, and i was clipping because i couldn’t just bookmark/save the page i was on. *sigh*
Hello, i noticed ONE major problem that im facing. Is there any way i can view items that i did not add to a particular notebook from the ALL MY STUFF section? i realize that sometimes when im in a hurry, i tend to add something to springpad and i did not add it to a particular notebook. then when i want to view that item, it becomes difficult to find because its lost in between the hundrends over other item i have in ALL MY STUFF. does anybody else face this? does springpad have a solution to this?
Omar,
I don’t know if this will work for you, but I created an Inbox notebook. I put anything I don’t want to put in a specific notebook there. Then, I can easily find the unfiled stuff.
Dave
well its pretty complicated…………..
When will the boards be available in the android app?
dear Dave and Omar,
I tried the Inbox Notebook and it works pretty well
Jean
Would it be possible to have a default notebook that everything added on the All My Stuff page or the quick notes in the Android app go into. That would make the idea of using an Inbox work great.
Dave
I totally agree with Dave about the utility of a either an Inbox, or a user-definable “Default Notebook” for things that one springs.
I think that an Inbox of some sort is simply essential. Otherwise, like Omar mentioned, having to deal with the “All My Stuff” folder for incoming items becomes overwhelming.
By the way, Is it possible to sort/search based on the category field? Even just having Category as a search-indexed field would help a lot, but I’ve not had any luck with it so far.
Thanks for a GREAT product and for any help!
Will
Im having a hard time figuring this out. Anytime i find a page or sonething on line and want to save it it comes up as a bookmark n i cant file like things together. I like the idea of springpad but im not understanding it. Please help
Hi,
I’m a new user of SP. Everything is good apart from one thing.
One feature that springpad does not have – categories for bookmarks. Tags are good but that is a completely different beast. When I save a bookmark the only way for me to organise it and to put into the right place [say a page related to News] – to remember the correct tag for News otherwise it will just go into no tags land. And what about when I have 1000 bookmark? If you were to have categories there – that would make everything a million times easier. All bookmarks then can be placed/kept in a correct category and can be located and used at ease at any time. As it is now – it is very hard – I need to use a tag for a category and call it like this 1_News; 2_Business; 3_Interesting. Would be superb if it can be improved in the new future.
Apart from this [and a few minor bugs here and there - nothing is perfect these days] – great product.
Thanks
Mark
How can I sort Notebooks other than in the default order, ie the order in which they are created? There is no sort function I can find.
Also how about Notebook hierachy eg a folder ‘Italy’ with Notebooks ‘Hotels’, ‘Tourist sites’, ‘ Public transport’ , contained within.
Also I add my voice to the serious lack of Springpad’s functionality outside of the US. It’s little more than a competent bookmark manager.
Hi Devin,
Thanks for you reply. No one has ever suggested this?
You are kidding, aren’t you?
To have categories/folders for bookmarks? But what about notes? The same problem… Why can not you let users to have categories where they can put notes. There are 4 of us in our small company. Believe me or not but all 4 of us can not use Springpad because of this. So pity. There are thousands and thousands of us that need this feature, trust me on that. Such a great product and it’s no good to us. For one with a lot of bookmarks and notes without categories SP will bring more probs than good. Any chances to introduce this feature in the very near future? Please.
Thanks for your quick reply. Yes drag and drop does work on desktop but doesn’t work on tablet or phone (android), and desktop arrangement is not reflected on mobile devices
Btw, this is a great application, and for increased functionality I would happily pay.
Sid
Thanks Devin, I’ve just checked and it has synced correctly although for some reason it didn’t when I forced a sync last night.
Sid
Is there a solution coming to creating folders and sub folders? An example, having a client folder and then each clients sub folder listed in that folder. From an organizational and clutter standpoint it just makes sense.

We’re adding the “Inbox” feature for un-filed items with the next release in Feb
Do you know when in February this will be released.
Also, will the “Inbox” feature be available for the Android app.
Is there a way to edit a tag you’ve already created? I didn’t realize that tags were case-sensitive, and I’d like to change them to lowercase, but right now, that means going through all of them and retagging them…
Hi! Is there any way to order the tags? I noticed that they are not in alphabetic order and preferably I’d like to have the most frequently used tag first.
Also, it would be nice to have a function to show objects from more than one selected tag at a time.

Jason – try resizing your window, your screen is probably high res or zoomed out so only 22 items are shown, resize smaller to get a scroll bar to see more items. (we’ll be fixing this soon)
Yuriy – No limit on tags, feel free to email feedback@springpartners.com or me at brittni@springpartners.com for feature requests.

Hi Rikke – the best way to “edit” tags is to use our bulk edit feature: http://blog.springpadit.com/2010/12/use-bulk-edit-to-update-multiple-items-in-springpad/
I love the tags feature. One problem I have with Springpad is that it seems that you can’t have tags sorted alphabetically. When I want to find something based on its tag, I know what the tag is. I do not know how many time I used it.

Hey Omar – this is definitely a popular request and we agree, it’s got to be a feature! We plan on adding it soon.
Omar,
I don’t know if this will work for you, but I created an Inbox notebook. I put anything I don’t want to put in a specific notebook there. Then, I can easily find the unfiled stuff.
Dave
well its pretty complicated…………..
When will the boards be available in the android app?
We don’t have a timeline on this right now. Sorry!
dear Dave and Omar,
I tried the Inbox Notebook and it works pretty well
Will
Hi Will – We’re adding the “Inbox” feature for un-filed items with the next release in Feb
As for categories, if you select a type on the left nav then use the advanced filter to further narrow your search, that might help for now
Im having a hard time figuring this out. Anytime i find a page or sonething on line and want to save it it comes up as a bookmark n i cant file like things together. I like the idea of springpad but im not understanding it. Please help
Hi Sara – I’m sorry you having trouble! Are you using the clipper or the extension (in Firefox or Chrome)? If you use the clipper, you have the option to change the type of thing you are saving (i.e. if it defaults to bookmark, you can change it to a product). If you are using the extension, this option is not yet available, but you can choose to add things to a notebook.
I’m not sure I completely understand your issue with filing like things together. Can you please give me a little more information? You can email me directly: devin@springpartners.com
Hi,
I’m a new user of SP.
Thanks
Mark
Hi Mark – This is a great suggestion, thank you!
Hi Sid – You can drag and drop folders in the order you want. We don’t have notebook folders yet, but it’s a popular request that we are definitely considering. We hear you about the functionality outside the US. We’d love to have the bandwidth to do that, but unfortunately it’s not in the cards right now. Hopefully soon, and sorry in the meantime!
Hi Devin,
Thanks for you reply.
Please.
Mark – You can use Notebooks and Tags to help you categorize your bookmarks, notes or any other type of item you save in Springpad. In addition, you can save search filters to help give you another layer of organization. I’m sorry we cannot give you the exact specific feature you are looking for at the moment!
Thanks for your quick reply. Yes drag and drop does work on desktop but doesn’t work on tablet or phone (android), and desktop arrangement is not reflected on mobile devices
Btw, this is a great application, and for increased functionality I would happily pay.
Sid
Hi Sid – You’re right, Android doesn’t have the drag/drop feature yet (I’d like to have that too!). Your desktop arrangement should reflect in the mobile devices: what web browser are you using when you change the order?
Thanks Devin, I’ve just checked and it has synced correctly although for some reason it didn’t when I forced a sync last night.
Sid
Great news Sid! Thanks for letting me know!
Is there a solution coming to creating folders and sub folders? An example, having a client folder and then each clients sub folder listed in that folder. From an organizational and clutter standpoint it just makes sense.
Hi Phil – We did not add this feature in the March release, but this is becoming a popular request, so we are definitely considering it for the future!

Do you know when in February this will be released.
Also, will the “Inbox” feature be available for the Android app.
Hi Dave – Thanks for keeping us on our toes! You’re right, we promised Feb and worked real hard to make that deadline. We are on par for end of March. Sorry for the delay, but we want to make sure it’s tight before we release
Is there a way to edit a tag you’ve already created? I didn’t realize that tags were case-sensitive, and I’d like to change them to lowercase, but right now, that means going through all of them and retagging them…
Hi Butter – Unfortunately not right now, but definitely a good idea!
Hi! Is there any way to order the tags? I noticed that they are not in alphabetic order and preferably I’d like to have the most frequently used tag first.
Also, it would be nice to have a function to show objects from more than one selected tag at a time.
Hi Jenny – You can order tags alphabetically in notebooks. From inside a notebook, click on the wrench icon next to the notebook title, click on the Navigation tab > Tag section. There you can change the order from Count to Name.
