Introducing the Springpad Firefox Extension

We’re happy to announce the availability of the Springpad Extension for Firefox 4 users! Our latest browser extension complements the Springpad web app & mobile apps by making it easier for you to save and access information while surfing the web.

Install the Springpad Firefox Extension now. (Available for Firefox 4+)

Save information to Springpad without leaving the site you’re on

Quickly save Notes, Tasks or anything else without launching the web app:

  • Type in a Note or Task directly from the extension
  • If you’d like to save something more specific, use Look It Up to help you save it to Springpad – great for books, movies, albums & more!

Use the clipper to easily bookmark any page to read later:

  • Highlight text or images to include in it your bookmark
  • Right-click on a page to save it, without having to launch the extension
  • For supported sites, Springpad will automatically detect and categorize useful details on the page such as a movie, product or recipe

Access your Springpad items without leaving the site you’re on

Use notebooks and tags to organize your stuff:

  • On the extension home screen, hop directly into one of your notebooks to view your stuff by topic
  • Add something new directly into a notebook
  • When you add something new, attach a tag to help you find it later
  • Search by your tag name or click on a tag to find all related items
  • Learn more about using notebooks and tags in Springpad

Access and use your Springpad items from wherever you are on the web:

  • Search, filter and sort to quickly find your stuff
  • Scan your tasks and check off items as you complete them
  • Filter by bookmarks to access articles you saved for later
  • Look up restaurants you’ve saved to quickly access directions, phone numbers and links to menus, reservations and reviews

  1. Hank says:

    Still needs work.

Can only add tags when clipping a web page and not change the folder of where it (the clip) should go. At this time it appears that the folder needs to be selected prior to clipping.

  2. [...] [...]

  3. Ross LaRocco says:

Aw, it doesn’t work on the Aurora builds. Ahead of the curve, it’s not you ;)

  4. Brian Woods says:

I was unable to install the new firefox addon. keep getting an error message – Springpad Extension could not be installed because Firefox can’t modify the needed file. I’m running Firefox 4.0

    Any ideas?

  5. Trying to work says:

Um, how long is Springpad going to be down for? The “not available now” screen doesn’t give any hint. Minutes? Hours? All day? I’d like a hint about when I’ll be able to get to my todo list.

  6. Ivan says:

When installing the extension, FF4 reports that it cannot install the extension because Firefox could not modify the needed file. The extension is not installed, and attempts to reinstall it also fail.
Are you aware of which file FF needs to modify to do the installation, or what the issue could be? Thanks.

  7. RRD says:

Why would you release a crippled add-on? Being able to select the folder and having the ability to key in tags seem to be vital functions of using Springpad. I understand that Firefox is preventing your add-on from working correctly. Still, it gives the impression that Springpad is more concerned with getting things out the door than with having them work right to begin with.

  8. Ivan says:

An update… I also use Portable Apps which has a portable version of FF4 and the installation worked flawlessly on it…
I have the same FF4 extensions on both copies of FF4.
As reported elsewhere by others, I have the same configuration information as them and have the same username in both instances of my installations.
Thanks again for a great product, and hopefully a solution to this problem.

  9. Satish Medos says:

Extension is installed perfectly but when using right click and saving items to springpad doesn’t at all work .. what might be the issue any ideas ?? btw am using FF4 on Ubuntu 11.04

  10. Sankar says:

Thanks, I have been missing this for sometime.

  11. Ivan says:

Further update: I captured the following error during the install process from the FF4 error console:

Warning: WARN addons.xpi: Failed to install: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIZipReader.extract]” nsresult: “0×80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)” location: “JS frame :: resource://gre/modules/XPIProvider.jsm :: extractFiles :: line 865″ data: no]
    Source File: resource://gre/modules/XPIProvider.jsm
    Line: 865

Hope it is of some use in isolating the problem…

  12. Chad Weimer says:

The login through this extension always fails when used with the Aurora channel (Firefox 5.0a2).

  13. Ivan says:

Just tried the new update of SpringPad FF4 extension and it works!

  14. RRD says:

I just reinstalled the add-on, still a no-go. Let me know if you need help testing it.

  15. katin says:

Hey guys – We have fixed the issue with installing the Firefox extension. The problem was due to the length of the directory name where the extension is saved for many Windows users. If you were having issues, follow the link in the post above to try it out.

This also means that for those of you who installed the extension last week, you’ll need to re-install. Please follow these steps:
    – Remove the Springpad extension from your browser
    – Go here & download the extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/springpad/
    – Log in with your Springpad username & password

If you are continuing to have issues, please send us details at feedback@springpartners.com or post your issue to our support forum here: http://getsatisfaction.com/springpartners/topics/cant_install_springpad_firefox_extension

  16. nesos01 says:

Thanks for the quick response and the great extension.

  17. Jay says:

I was able to install it onto Mozilla Aurora (Firefox 5.x). Although, I do not see an option to login using my Gmail username / password.

Is this capability going to be added to the Firefox extension? Thank you.

    • katin says:

Hi Jay – You’ll need to log in at Springpadit.com, click on Settings & set up a username & password. Then use that info to log in on the extension.

  18. uhgotnegum says:

One small request with the extension…

Can you please make it so it recognizes if I’ve already logged in to the website, or make is so common password managers can recognize the login fields?

I’m currently logged in to the website, but when I click the extension I have to log in again…seems overly burdensome, especially when I don’t know my Springpad password b/c I use a password manager.

Other than that, it works great. Thanks!

  19. Seth says:

Is there a keyboard shortcut to activate the firefox extension?

  20. Chris says:

    Hi everyone!
I can install the firefox extension v. 2.1.1104.27 on my Vista notebook with ff 4.0.1 but being logged in I only get a blank pop up window :-(
    greets, chris

  21. Jay says:

Based on feedback, I created a new login ID & password on the springpadit.com site. I still cannot log in to the extension using either the new springpadit.com user account or my usual Gmail account login.

This extension is too confusing to set up – without support for Gmail logins, it’s a pain. Sorry.

  22. Seth says:

Katin – I know of other Firefox extensions that bind to keyboard shortcuts. The Delicious one for instance, opens a tag browser on Command+B.

  23. Chris says:

    Hi Katin,
@ 27. Clearing the cache didn’t help anything. Perhaps it has something to do with my german version of FF?
I opened the error console and found about 60 warnings (in german), most of them:

    “Unknown property ‘(xyz…)’. Declaration ignored.
    resource://ext-at-sprng-dot-me-springpad-data/css/springpad.css
    Line (abc)

    e.g.

Warnung: Unbekannte Eigenschaft ‘transform’. Deklaration ignoriert.
    resource://ext-at-sprng-dot-me-springpad-data/css/springpad.css
    Zeile: 276

Should I post it here or send you by mail?

  24. Chad Weimer says:

Katin – I am still unable to get this to work in the Aurora channel. I installed the latest version of the extension as well as tried changing my password. Neither worked. I am able to log in successfully when running against Firefox 4.0.1.

  25. Andrew says:

I have the same issue as Chris – just a blank window pops up on my MacBook Air running 10.6.7 and Firefox 4.0.1.

    • katin says:

If anyone is having trouble with the Firefox extension (blank window), it was due to the extension caching a broken connection during our downtime 2 weeks ago. Here’s what to do: Remove the Firefox extension, clear your browser cache, then reinstall the Firefox extension. That should fix it!

  26. Charles says:

It seems to me (and maybe I’m crazy) that you can neither move this extension from it’s default position, nor use it in text (as opposed to icon) view.

Kinda borks it for those of us that use text view for our bars.

    C./

  27. Andrew says:

Nope – that didn’t do it Katin:
    Extension removed
    Firefox restarted
Cache cleared (625 MB down to 0MB!)
    Extension reinstalled
    still a blank window
    Firefox restarted
    still a blank window

  28. Chris says:

    @37. Same for me! :-(

  29. Chris says:

    Hi again!
I tried the extension on my Win7 Netbook and it works fine there, but it doesn’t under Win Vista SP2! (FF 4.0.1)

  30. Suzannah says:

About the bug that hank noticed in the first comment that the staff mentioned could not be fixed until mozilla fixed their own bug:

I stumbled on a workaround that is a little faster than always having to go to the springpad site to change notebooks.

If you want to add the clipping to a notebook, first click on the springpad extension icon, as if you are going to explore your springpad notebooks from the extension, then click on the home button (the little house icon), click the notebook you are about to add the clipping to. then click on the little scissors.

the extension will add the clipping to the last notebook you accessed.

this sounds longer than it really is, btw.

  31. Richard M says:

Just started with Springpad and I like the Firefox Extension thing. I use tags a lot especially for bookmarks. When using the extension it just lists the bookmarks for me – I see I can sort them but I really would like to be able to select a tag without typing it in the search box. Am I missing something or can you consider this as a future enhancement please? A “Tags” dropdown like the “select a type” box would be great.

  32. Nooap says:

Hi, I also the same problem (#37, #38) on my Windows XP and FF 4.0.1 from today!!
I could use the extension a few days ago.
    What happend?

  33. Andrew says:

brittini I wish that worked, but it doesn’t!

  34. Nooap says:

Thank you brittni, but the extension has not worked after clering
cache, cookies in firefox and rebooting it…

BTW, it is interesting and helpful that the web clipper in the
bookmark works perfectly… Oh, may it be the cause?

OK, I tried … YES, the extension works now!!

I did the following procedures and there may be meaningless ones.

    1. I removed the web clipper in bookmark.
    2. I cleared the cache of firefox just in case.
    3. I reboot the firefox in safe mode (= no use add-ons), to ensure
the removing and clearing. We can do this operation from the
    help in firefox.
    4. I reboot the firefox in normal mode.
    5. The extension works!!

I hope this helps similar users and programmers in our
    lovely Springpad!!

  35. asiim says:

How can i move the button from navigation tool-bar to the tabs tool-bar?

  36. Andrew says:

Nice suggestion nooap – I tried it but still get a blank window after restarting in normal mode :(

  37. Nooap says:

    Hi, Andrew.
Today I installed the extension into my new PC and it didn’t work!!
(Of course I did the procedures in #45, but they didn’t help)

Mh… I think that the extension has some critical bugs because I experienced this problem on 2 PCs (I have no problem on 3 PCs and it means that about 40% PCs have this problem :-)

This problem is critical for me, so I will use Springpad for more one or two weeks and decide to continue to use it or move to other services…

  38. FuzzyW says:

    Hi there,
    @asiim
I also would like to move the button to another toolbar. I don’t use the navigation toolbar.

  39. Andrew says:

Nooap and Katin – I noticed there is a new version of the extension date 13 May that supposedly fixes blank screens, but doesn’t fix anything with my problem…frustrating. Will have to either keep a tab open or go back to Evernote…

  40. Toshiro says:

Its keeps logging me out. It doesnt remember my login: username and password.

Do I need to login everytime?

  41. faiz says:

I cant login via FF add-on but can do so via web. Currently using FF 5.0. any idea to solve this? Thanks!

    • katin says:

faiz – There is currently an issue with our Firefox extension preventing Firefox 5 users from logging in. It should be fixed later today!

  42. Olliver says:

    Same as Nr.37

    Firefox Version 4.0.1

    Springpad Extension: Latest

  43. Ivan says:

    Hi all,
I’ve just been playing with FF6.0a1 (2011-05-23 and once I changed the max version number, it currently allows me to log in via the FF extension. I can’t replicate that in 5.0beta, where I am locked out…
Something appears to be broken in FF5.0beta.
    Regards,
    Ivan

  44. Ivan says:

    Hi all,
I’ve just successfully used Springpad extension on FF5.0b2, thanks for the fix!
    Regards,
    Ivan

  45. faiz says:

Still got the ‘Incorrect Username or Password’ message despite clearing caches, restart in safe mode and what not…

  46. Alberto says:

I would like to make some changes in existing tasks and notes using my springpad extension for firefox 4.0.1 for Mac …, but I can´t do it, there is a little padlock close in the upper right side of the panel.

How could I add/delete/modify the contents in a task that previously exist using the firefox extensión?

Thank you very much in advance

    Alberto

    • katin says:

Alberto – We don’t yet support editing items via the Springpad extension, but we do hope to add this in the future. For now, click on “View and edit in Springpad!” to make your edits via the web app.

  47. Pawel says:

I can’t log in using the extension. I’ve read in a comment on youtube that you can’t log in with the extension if you’re using your gmail account. Will that be fixed?

  48. Martin says:

Can’t find the extension on the addons-site.
The link also do not work.
Is the extension no longer available?

  49. Owen says:

Any news on progress on the availability of the add on?

  50. temperance says:

    Plz, Check the url.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/springpad/

    I can’t find a firefox add-on program. What should I do?

  51. Heather says:

Any news on when the extension will be available? I have to keep jumping to Chrome to use it, which is…frustrating!

    Thank you in advance!

  52. brittni says:

Hey everyone – the Extension link is active again! Check it out! https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/springpad/

  53. Heather says:

Excellent news. I have now installed!

    Thank you so much!

  54. Andrew says:

Same problem as previously – only difference is now there is a pretty little “Springpad” logo in the bottom left corner of the white stripe on an otherwise dark grey screen.

  55. Chris says:

@21 I’m sorry to say that, but it’s the same for me. And clicking the logo gets me to http://undefined/springpad/#home (FF 4.0.1 German, Windows Vista Home Premium (German), SP 2)

  56. Eric says:

For some reason the Springpad extension just stopped working; it doesn’t even show up anymore in the navigation toolbar (Firefox 4.0.1).
Anyone else having the same problems / knows of a solution?

  57. Tobi says:

I also would like to move the button to another toolbar. I don’t use the navigation toolbar. Is there a way?

  58. Tobi says:

I also would like to move the button to another toolbar. I don’t use the navigation toolbar. Is there a way??

  59. Liz says:

Me too, on the firefox extension disappearing!!

  60. Amanda says:

This is so annoying. These extensions etc. never work. It always says error, as it did on the last one they put out. I am about done with Springpad because it’s so irritating!

    • katin says:

Amanda – I am so sorry that you are having trouble! We have heard from a handful of users who repeatedly have issues, but we have not been able to figure out exactly what’s going on. Here are a few things to try:
      – Clear your browser cache
      – Restart your browser
      – Follow these steps to completely remove the extension http://gsfn.us/t/2aybv – then reinstall it

If you are still have issues, please send us a note at feedback@springpartners.com with your username, browser version, and whether you’re using a pc or mac

  61. Amanda says:

Ok, thank you! I’m not trying to be ornery haha, I just love my Springpad!!

  62. Liz says:

    hey, its working now!

  63. Andrew says:

Still no luck (Mac OS 10.6.7, Firefox 5.0)

    Cleared Browser cache
    Restarted Firefox
Completely uninstalled extension per directions at http://gsfn.us/t/2aybv
    Restarted firefox
Reinstalled the extension – still got a dark grey blank window with a white stripe at the bottom that says “Springpad”
    restarted firefox
Tried to use extension but same as above.

  64. Todd says:

Same as Andrew: blank window on FF 4.0.1 on Windows 7

  65. Pawel says:

Something’s gone wrong with the Firefox extension: I have to log in each time I start Firefox. I think it started after I upgraded to Firefox 5.

  66. Worf says:

still getting blank like Andrew. I tried on firefox 5 and firefox 4

  67. brittni says:

Worf, Todd and Andrew – this issue should be fixed with the latest FF extension version. Can you update/install and give it try? Thanks!

  68. Andrew says:

    success, Finally!!!

  69. Pawel says:

It seems my problem is gone – the extension logs in automatically again. Thanks!

  70. Anne says:

    Hi
I am trying to install a firefox addon for springpad on my xoom. The addon search in mobile add ons comes up with nothing. Is the addon not available for the xoom?

  71. Chris says:

Thanks! Now all works fine for me!!! (-> 22.)

  72. Todd says:

@brittni, the extension is working now for me on FF 4.0.1 on Win7. Thank you.

  73. Myst says:

having login issue using chrome extension.
    “Could not connect to Springpad.
    Please check your connection.”

  74. Sheldon says:

    Hi,

Would like to have the latest extension for Firefox 8..

    Thank You.

  75. Jay says:

Firefox 7.0.1 fails to install the Springpad extension with an error saying it wasn’t the add-on that it expected. please help… or I’m stuck with Chrome which feels so much slower than the new Firefox.

    • katin says:

Jay – There was a issue with installing many popular extensions in Firefox 7 over the past few days. Please clear your browser cache & try again today (Mozilla has put in a fix).

  76. Mark Richards says:

    Breaks on Firefox 9.

    Blank window appears.

Cleared cache. Removed. Re-installed. No fix, yet.

  77. Sabrina says:

This looks like a super cool extension, but… I use Mozilla’s Sea Monkey browser and was wondering if there were any plans to provide an extension version that would be compatible?

    Thanks lots!

  78. wtf says:

this is absolutely useless without the ability to edit notes! whats the point seriously! fix it please!

  79. pse says:

    Hi,

    Maybe releated to wtf’s post:

I don’t understand why the clipped page is saved as an image and not as a HTML note?

    - viewing a web page through an image is less user-firendly than inside a browser
    - you can’t edit text content of saved note
    - image only captures the visible portion of page!

I posted the question on getsatisfaction.com yesterday: http://getsatisfaction.com/springpartners/topics/capture_web_page_as_html

  80. Ivan Z says:

I’m using FF9B2 and am not having any issues with SpringPad. Maybe there is a conflict with other extensions, Java or .net?

  81. Ivan Z says:

Oops, Sorry I have to retract that :( … It is broken for me too…

  82. John says:

Totally worthless designed for mom’s and kids, I was looking for a web app that actually lets me take notes not re-access there lame ass webpage over and over.

  83. John says:

    To katin:

Thank you what good is this program if I have to click in 10,000 places just to add a line of text to my notes!

  84. Adam says:

John, I’m not sure what is up with your bitter and derisive tone. Millions of satisfied customers can’t be wrong. I think it’s just you.

  85. Michipoo18 says:

It would be nice if you could add a bookmark as an attachment to an existing note.

  86. Owen Marcus says:

Springpad looks good… but the extension in FF 7 is not working. I have to reload the extension every time I restart FF.

    • Devin says:

Hi Owen – If you can, try updating to the latest version, Firefox 9. We have recently submitted a fix to the extension in FF9 and are awaiting approval from Firefox, so it should be up and running soon. Otherwise, try un- then re-installing Firefox 7, and see if that helps. If not, feel free to email feedback@springpartners.com for more support!

  87. AG says:

Has problem with FF9 fixed? It is still not working for me. I saw it was reported since November.

  88. Marlene Spector says:

Hi, Neither the Clipper nor the extension work in Firefox 9. This is very frustrating. There is also nothing in the Context Menu when I right click. When can we expect a fix?

  89. Phil says:

I’m running FF 9.01 and the browser extension is not working for me.

  90. Mark Richards says:

I can confirm that, for me, it works in FF10.

Also the extension loads a nice optional toolbar.

  91. Antonio says:

The springpadit doesn’t works anymore. I have installed the version 9 of Firefox and now I can’t use the program!!!

    Help!!

  92. Steve Nielsen says:

@Mark Richards – what version did you install? I got mine from the FF add-on site but I get the same results as post#3, Adam W.

  93. nooap says:

Hi Devin, the FF extension new version 2.5.1112.25 works well even on the FF 11.02a! I’m very glad because older extensions have not worked.
    Thank you!!!

  94. Mark Richards says:

    @Steve Nielsen
    Version 10.

I just installed the 2.5 release and it’s also fine in 10.

  95. Adam says:

Fantastic work, guys, it’s now working again in FF9 & 10 on the Mac! Thanks!

  96. Melisa says:

Why isn’t there any way to tell it which folder to put something in now? Also, on FF9 the Springit button is white on white, so unreadable. And there needs to be a way to move the icon to where we want it, like we can with all other FF icons.

  97. Adam says:

I can verify what Melisa said about the inability to choose what folder you’re clipping an item into using the FF extension.
I also noticed that clicking the “View and Edit in SpringPad” button (when looking at a specific item in the extension) takes me to my Springpad home (top level), vice taking me to the item for editing.
Both of these are rather annoying. Not sure what Melisa is talking about wrt the Springit button, as mine seems fine.

  98. Tim says:

For various reasons I switched from Firefox to Seamonkey as my primary browser. As a result, my interaction with Springpad has decreased. It would be really nice if you could at least “unofficially” support Seamonkey — it may only take a small tweak to the current addon to make it compatible…

  99. curasam says:

Quit Springpad because of the extension to FF bug (no context menu)
Now with QuickFox…much easier and less clutter and less clicks !

    • Devin says:

Hi Curasam – I’m sorry you are having problems. We were experiencing issues with the FF extension, but it has since been fixed. What problems are you experiencing right now? I can help! :)

  100. Stephane says:

Interesting but how to past text in a FF springpad extension note ? ctrl+v doesn’t work and there is no context menu :-/

  101. kotov says:

My Firefox 11 crashes right after start with the latest Springpad extension. I’m using Ubuntu 10.10. Hope to see it fixed, thanks in advance.

    • Devin says:

Hi Kotov – I’m sorry. This is a known issue. We did not work on this for our latest release, but hopefully we can work on this soon!

  102. brittni says:

Hi Adam – we are looking into the FF9 issue. Thanks.
