New! Springpad Friends Stuff gives you recommendations from your friends
ATTENTION: This post contains details about a previous version of Springpad. To learn about the updates in Springpad 3.0, check out this blog post: “The New Springpad Makes It Fun and Easy to Share.”
Today we’re announcing a brand new Friends Stuff notebook that allows you to see your real-life friends’ Likes and Check-ins, even if your friends aren’t Springpad users! Starting with integration with your Facebook account, Springpad automatically pulls in all of your friends’ likes and check-ins, and categorizes them as movies, books, music, tv shows, or places – then lets you save a copy for yourself! (read the press release)
See how it works:
We’re excited to combine useful social data with Springpad’s semantic technology! This gives you the ability to “remember” the things your friends are talking about without having to save them at that very moment.
Some great uses for the new Friends Stuff:
- Plan your visit to a new city by searching for friends’ likes and check-ins
- Pick the next book you’ll read based on the likes of one of your trusted friends
- Discover new bands to check out
- Find ideas for movies to queue up on Netflix
- Use the mobile app to search near your current location for your friends’ favorite places
We’ll be rolling out the new Friends Stuff over the coming month, but if you want to be one of the first ones to get it, here’s how to add yourself to the list of Beta users:
- Log in to your account at Springpadit.com
- On the left side of your homescreen, you’ll see a notification that allows you to sign up for the new Friends Stuff Beta
- You’ll need to authenticate with Facebook to be added to the list of early users
- We’ll send you an email letting you know when you can check out the new Friends Stuff
- As always, let us know what you think! (feedback@springpartners.com)
Once you have access to the new Friends Stuff on the Springpad web app, you’ll also see the new Friends Stuff in your iPhone, Android, and iPad apps!

Yet another feature that makes Springpad a killer life organizer. Thanks for the constant innovation!
This looks awesome. Yet, I am surprised that you continue to send out completely new updates/functionality even when there are many things that need to be improved on the existing functions. The biggest one I believe is the internationalization of quick links, contextual information, etc.
Would like to see existing user requests a little more prioritized before you roll out functions that are cool but no one asked for them.
Sometimes good ideas don’t work for everyone. Can one try the facebook “link” then change their mind and UNlink it?
Thanks!

For some reason, I haven’t been able to link my Facebook profile. I’ve tried occasionally for days. I saved an example of the “sorry message” to my Springpad http://springpadit.com/nhcl/c8211281/0f86/49a3/9c22/f08595d72a0c (don’t worry, I changed my email-in address after clipping this). Any thoughts?
Gotta agree with Konrad on this one. There are numerous items of basic functionality on GetSatisfaction which have been there for months or even years, have literally hundreds of votes from your enthusiastic and engaged users, are the topic of frequent intelligent debate (including many people suggesting detailed and well thought out solutions for you), and continue to be pushed aside.
The argument from Spring is always “We only have so many resources”, yet you roll out shiny toys like this “Friends Stuff” before taking care of fundamental features like a proper inbox/”search for uncategorized items” and internationalisation. I know it sucks having to work on boring things like the fundamentals, but the general feeling among a lot of your users, me included, is that despite frequent assertions that you listen to your user base, you could give a monkey’s what committed users want and are only interested in flashy features, like turning a potentially excellent notes app into a half-arsed social network.
Friend’s Stuff is the worst feature of Springpad and yet you’ve chosen to focus on it. “turning a potentially excellent notes app into a half-arsed social network” as Mark commented sums it up. I don’t need yet another inlet to social networking. And if you must offer it, at least have the capability of turning it off.
Sorry I have to ditch this service.
Goodbye.
Can’t wait to see what features you have in store for us. I’ve really been enjoying Springpad and integrating it into my daily activities!
Springpad Friends Stuff it is useful tool, thank you. It seems like the same tool in Facebook!

Did I hear Collaboration!?! My boyfriend and I are working on some projects together – I’m a sculptor, he’s a musician – and we have been wishing that we could have shared notebooks that show up on both of our account home pages and that we can both edit and add to… can I get excited?
Also, repeating tasks…yay!
How about the option to save a notebook directly to a friends springpad. Make it so that I can choice actually which item is shared with exactly which friend. Spring pad would have to go beyond this followers “@^# and make my sharing group more personalized. It isn’t cool that the only true share option is Public.
Second I like the friend notebook that shows up if I didn’t have a social network available. An finally I would like a way to unfriend this springpad “person” that has all these wonderful options (bad adds) from my friends stuff notebook.
my new friends stuff just keeps loading and never loads.
I agree with madcander. HOW do I make the useless ads disappear from Friends stuff.
Friends don’t send useless spam.

Konrad – Thanks for sharing your point of view.
Cindy – Sure you can unlink from Facebook under Settings at any time.

Noah – Try this: Logout of Springpad & Facebook in your browser. Clear your browser cache, then login to both again & try linking. If you are still having trouble, send us an email with your username – feedback@springpartners.com

Mark & thistle –
Thanks for sharing your point of view on this. We understand that Friends Stuff is not everyone’s cup of tea, and we appreciate those of you who want more productivity-related features. Luckily, Friends Stuff is just one notebook in Springpad!
Let me take this chance to let you know that we’ve got some big, exciting improvements coming for you guys this fall. We’ve been working on fixes over the last month or so and have been developing our new Friends Stuff in parallel with other features – then we just release them as they are ready. So stay tuned for features like collaboration, repeating tasks, notebook customization & custom views.
Sorry to have disappointed you, if you hang in there I promise we’ll make up for it!

Yashodhan – sorry about that, we’re looking into this issue now for some users. I’ll add you to our list.

Hi pogosplacebooks – We are changing the way friends stuff works with our next update coming in a few weeks. Will make what you view and who you follow much easier to customize. Hang tight, ok?
