Updated Springpad Clipper Simplifies Saving Things from the Web

We’ve just released an update to the Springpad Clipper! Not only did we give it a facelift and speed it up a bit, we’ve simplified it, too! So now you can save things you find around the web with just a couple of clicks.

If you’re already using the Springpad Clipper, the update is automatic. Go ahead, clip away!  (Install the Springpad Clipper)

New Look, New Flow

We’ve updated the clipper to allow you to save things to Springpad with fewer clicks. And, we’ve kept your favorite clipper features intact:

  • Auto-detects the type of thing you’re trying to save, from a bookmark to a recipe to a product
  • Allows you to re-categorize what you’re saving
  • Includes any text that you’ve highlighted when you open the clipper
  • Lets you choose a photo thumbnail from the page you’re clipping
  • Allows you to add tags & file directly into a notebook
  • Works with any browser

Plus, we’ve added a couple of new features:

  • “Pop-out” the clipper to open it in a new window, allowing you copy content from the page you’re clipping into the thing you’re saving
  • When you define the page as a product or movie, we’ll automatically save the related information without you doing any additional work

Optimized for iPhone and iPad mobile browser

When you’re using your iOS device to surf the web, you can clip anything you come across directly to Springpad – just as you would from your computer. And with this latest update, we’ve resized the clipper to fit perfectly in the screen of your iOS device. Plus, with the release of version 2.5 of the Springpad iOS app, you’ll now find clipper installation instructions right in the settings screen of the app. How to Install the Springpad Clipper for your iPhone or iPad

The new clipper is fabulous! It makes using IE so much easier. Thanks!

  2. Noah says:

Will there be a corresponding update to the Chrome clipper extension?

    • katin says:

Noah – we are constantly working to improve the browser extensions. What features specifically are you looking for?

Tina – Thanks for letting us know. We are collecting input over the coming weeks & will make improvements to the clipper soon!

  3. Tina says:

I’m so not happy with this change. I understand the need for “simpler”, but you removed the other options. I immediately missed the option to edit the description, to add extra “media” (photos), etc. Please add those back. I love simple! But I love options.

    Thanks!

  4. David says:

The new clipper is awesome. I’m glad I beta tested it.

  5. Tina says:

    Thanks Katin,

You guys are the bomb by the way! Love love love SpringPad, and I love that you get back to us! Let us know what we can do for you!

  6. Cindy Olsen says:

just tried this with google chrome (sad face) . . the computer is where I do the majority of clipping – NOT the mobile (sad face)

Hope springpad will update the chrome application for clipping

  7. Fer says:

Sorry but clipper for ipad is not working very well, with some pages when i try to clip them, it iymply stay as a blank screen with springpad logo on bottom, but nothing else happens

  8. Elsie says:

While I appreciate the improvements, I miss having the functionality of what the clipper had with the old version. I use Springpad to save recipes and I find that I now cannot input in things such as servings and cuisine and course. And I can’t save more than 1 picture now? I don’t even know what I’m saving actually with the clipper. I miss the old version.

  9. lala says:

absolute pain installing the clipper on chrome. this is probably not your fault – suggest you could provide the source and instructions for manual addition of the clipper.

didn’t realise the old clipper was actually updated… it was more functional for me as it didn’t prevent me from copying text from the page i was on.
    previously:
    - click on bookmark
    - select recipe
    - it is not detected as recipe due to formatting issues on various blogs
    - but i can still copy the text manually to input into ingredients and directions
    - bad point of the old clipper was that saving to another notebook did not work. it all went into the default.

    currently
    - click on bookmark
    - select recipe
    - it is not detected as recipe due to formatting issues on various blogs
    - i am not allowed to copy the text manually to input into ingredients and directions
    - click to popout in new window ***wait****
    - before i can copy text from the recipe blog to the text boxes…

but i have the new interface is definitely prettier…hope this issue can be resolved, or at least remember my setting as popout as new window each time (without me having to wait, click, wait)

“- In Firefox, Safari, or Chrome: Drag above button to your browser’s Bookmarks Toolbar ”

Dragging button to bookmark toolbar in Chrome does not work.

  11. Pogos Place says:

This is virtually useless to me without the Note function . . . This is gone from a tool that I’m happy to use many times a day to a chore that no longer fully does the job. I’m disappointed.

  12. Bryan says:

    Awesome!!

  13. John Watson says:

Easy to use, looks good, but would be great if you could select multiple icons (add media) for inclusion as pictures in the “Sprung” material.

  14. Tina says:

I agree with Pogos. Can’t you add the options we had before in a drop down list at the bottom somewhere? Add media, notes, description, etc.?

  15. Cindy Olsen says:

the new “clipper” did come over automatically on IE (which I don’t use) but NOT on Chrome (which I use) so now I have OLD clipper extension and the new one as a bookmark . . which I do not prefer . . because showing the bookmark bar hogs screenspace . .

  16. kaeldra says:

I’m with lala (#10) and Elsie (#9) – I use the clipper primarily for recipes, mostly from blogs that the clipper doesn’t recognize as a recipe.

  17. Sush says:

love the new look of the clipper, but miss the functionalities of the old one :(
In the old clipper even though it doesn’t recognize a page as recipe it would still allow me to copy-paste from the page.. but not this one :(
Not able to add media is one more disadvantage.

  18. pete says:

I really really miss being able to save what I clipped as a note. Please add this back. Thanks

  19. Mary says:

I liked clipping as notes before. Now I’m on the verge of moving to Evernote. I tried clipping a recipe and it looks fine on the PC but all jacked up on my Android which is where I need it. Please please bring back the old functionality.

  20. Christy says:

I’m really unhappy with the new version of the clipper! When I spring stuff at work (where they only allow us to use IE7 with certain security settings), it’s now more cumbersome to use the clipper than to manually add a new note/bookmark/etc into a notebook.

First off since it pops up in a new window, I have to give each website permission to launch popups, every single time I use the clipper at a new site (which I do often).

Then when the clipper is working, only the first 9 of my notebooks are available in the drop-down. I have many more notebooks than that! I end up having to go directly to “All My Stuff” to add the newly sprung item to the correct notebook, tweak tags & add notes, etc. So why bother using the clipper at all?

But I do have to say – at home I use Chrome, and the clipper works beautifully with Chrome. So I’m happy with it in those instances. It’s just a shame that full functionality isn’t possible on all browsers.

  21. ZapBeeb says:

    I second qhat pete said.

I’d like to save what i clipped as a note.

  22. Chuqui says:

Most US citizens (and people around the world) use Android, not iOS, and you keep working for a minority. I stay with Evernote.

  23. Monica says:

You mentioned an updated version for iOS but are you planning an update for the android system? I hope so. I use Springpad twice as much on my phone than I do on my computer!

  24. Chris says:

The new clipper in the latest version of Safari seems to be working well. I agree with others that would like to see a “Note” type in the “Save as” drop down menu. This would be very beneficial when selecting a chunk of text from an article on a site.

I would suggest an extension for Safari that mimics the extension for Chrome and that would fix most gripes regarding the clipper and Safari browsers.

  25. David Harens says:

I hope you are planning a silk browser springit for the kindle fire

  26. Maddy says:

Tried the new clipper and it really doesn’t add anything except extra time to do something that should be done in seconds. When I tried to clip restaurant details from a regular website, it wouldn’t register it as a restaurant, but a bookmark, and when I switched the ‘save as’ type to restaurant, all the details disappeared.. The clipper misses the point entirely. I second the opinions of a lot of the others who’ve posted comments before. It looks great, but it doesn’t do what I want it to do.
