Andrea uses Springpad to keep her grocery list organized

Andrea Ratulowski is a health coach in Columbus, Ohio. She regularly conducts workshops on healthy eating, teaching participants how to meal plan and prep meals for the week ahead.

Being a Health Coach, one of the many things I get asked about the most is meal planning and prepping. I discuss how important it is to stay organized and tell my clients that one of the best ways to do that is by using Springpad to create a master grocery list. The great thing about creating a grocery list in Springpad is that you can constantly add to it and you never have to delete anything. You can review the list before you go shopping – the items you don’t need, just check them off.

How Andrea Uses Springpad:

  • Shopping Lists: Andrea loves to keep her grocery list on her at all times.  She uses Springpad to save her shopping lists so that she can stay organized on her computer and stay on track when at the grocery store. Check out some of Andrea’s Shopping Lists
  • One Master List: When creating a shopping list in Springpad, Andrea likes to use the “hide all checked items” feature. Before heading to she store she clicks “show all items”, reviews the list & decides what she needs.  She checks off the stuff she already has or doesn’t need, then hides the checked items again.
  • Notebooks for Specific Topics: In addition to organizing her grocery needs, Andrea creates notebooks for other life projects.  For example, she’s got one to hold links and information about a potential vacation spot and another to keep track of potential Christmas gifts for her husband. Some of Andrea’s favorite Springpad features:

Springpad has multiple uses and because it syncs across multiple devices, it’s the only program I use to stay organized and keep things on track.

  • Browser Extension: Andrea likes to use Springpad to keep track of links and articles that she comes across, and wants to feature on her blog. By using the browser extension, she can easily clip and save pages quickly then file them away for later use.  Check out the Chrome Extension, Firefox Extension & the web clipper (for all browsers).
  • Mobile Apps: Andrea finds that keeping Springpad synced up between devices helps her to stay organized.  Check out the Springpad Android app and Springpad iPhone/iPad app.

  1. I love Springpad…no doubt about it. But in recent Android app update you guys have removed the ability to specify/select the notebook I want to keep my bookmarks while sharing from some other app.
I was using this feature to organize my bookmarks for future reading by creating two Notebooks – Read it Later and Blog ideas. Now because of this change I can’t specify if I just want to read it later or I want to blog about it too. Every bookmark now goes on a big pool of over 500 bookmarks. Kind of defeats the purpose I was using Springpad.
If I may ask can you guys please restore that functionality back again.

    Thanks

The “hide all checked items” feature is good for simple checklists, but for shopping lists, something more is needed. Here’s what I’d like to see in a “super shopping list”:

l The list would have the following columns, or fields:
§ A “Flag” column, to indicate the items to buy
§ A check box column to be marked when the item has been placed in the shopping cart
§ The name of the item
§ A category column, for grouping or sorting, e.g., “groceries”, “clothing”, “toiletries”, “hardware”, etc.
§ A “Note” column for a brief comment about the item, color, size, etc.
l Set up the list by adding items, their categories, and any notes. It will probably become quite long over time. It’s your master shopping list.
l Flag all items you want to shop for in the master list. A search function will be very helpful here, as will a sort function.
    l Hide all non-flagged items.
l Check off items as they are placed in the shopping cart, which also hides that item.
l At the end of the shopping trip, clean up the list by invoking the “Reset” function, which un-checks and un-flags all checked items. Items that had been flagged, but which weren’t available, remain flagged for the next shopping trip.

I’ve been using something like the above for years, and it’s very convenient. Springpad’s current shopping list feature just isn’t strong enough. I’d like to see such a feature in Springpad so I can sync my shopping list across all my computers.

  3. I have the latest app installed on my Motorola Atrix, but I still see this issue.
As a matter of fact I see that on my Acer A500 tablet too.

    Thanks

I do love and use Springpad.

It may be too much to ask as Springpadit is catering a wide variety of needs and not specifically shopping, but it would be great if you could have product groups for ingredients so when you take ingredients from various recipes, they group correctly for when you go shopping eg Vegetables, meat, dairy … Also if you could enter ingredients so they total up. eg 2 onions in one recipe + 1 onion in another come out as 3 needed on the list.

    Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback, Eric. Currently, our approach is to allow you to manually re-order & edit shopping list items to make your list work best for you.

  5. Lee Kennedy says:

With a lot of checked items it can be a pain to uncheck them all when it comes time to reuse the list. Could you add a ‘check all/uncheck all’ button?

  6. Rachel says:

I agree with the suggestions above for Grocery List enhancements, such as category, quantity, price, etc. It would also be great to be able to scan a barcode to add something to the grocery list. Also, a general comment: the barcode database needs to be expanded. Besides Amazon, please include Google Products and other search options. Thanks.

  7. Roderic Rinehart says:

Seconding the NEED for check/uncheck all feature. I use Springpad daily, but the response “we’re considering it” is not encouraging. We use the same master list every month, and only go grocery shopping once a month, so unchecking all of them is a major PITA. Having one-click would be the best update so far.

  8. Anne Walters says:

I don’t see the shopping list under my quick links for recipes. Do I have to add that link manually somehow? This is on iPad, iPhone, etc

  9. gassperj says:

I love springpad. It just needs some improvements.
I agree with Lee and Roderic. Uncheck all fature would be great. Also it would bi nice to see ‘delete all checked’ button.
