Help Create the Best Startup Resource Guide Ever. Yes, Ever!

Next week, Springpad is showing the startup industry some serious love. We’ve already seen tons of entrepreneurs, startup-ers and tech lovers create awesome content on the platform, and we’re setting out to organize it into the Best Startup Resource Guide Ever so that the community has a place learn, share and pay-it-forward!

Are you an entrepreneur? Startup veteran? Angel investor? Founding member of a growing company? Organize your smarts on Springpad to share your favorite resources, lessons and inspirations with people just like you. Here’s how to get started…

1. Log in to your account at Springpad

2. Create a notebook or two (or ten!) that relate to the startup-life. Here are some ideas to get you started:

A catalog of your favorite startup blogs or articles
A list of essential entrepreneur tech gadgets
A catalog of your favorite inspirational videos or articles
A list of great 3rd party vendors for startups
A catalog of essentials guides to startup basics (raising money, hiring a team, marketing your product, etc.)
A profile of your own company or project
Check out some existing startup content for inspiration

3. Tag your gorgeous new notebooks with #Startups to ensure they show up on the tagged page. If you’re super proud of it, put the link in a comment on this post and we’ll be sure to check it out! (learn more about tagging notebooks)

4. Share the news about the #Startups tag with with your friends, co-workers and social media networks. Ask your friends to contribute too!

We’ll keep you posted about when the fancy new Startups tag page goes live, and we may even ask to feature your notebook on our homepage or in one of our Spotlight sections. Save steps when entering a note in the Springpad iPhone and iPad app

We recently released a bunch of updates to the Springpad platform. One of improvements was a simpler way to enter notes into the iOS app.

Here’s how:

Open a notebook in the iPhone or iPad app
Hit + at the bottom of the screen to enter something new, then choose Notes from the type selector (learn more)
You can then choose to type in a quick note and hit Done on the keyboard…
or, once you enter some text, choose Edit Note to jump into the full note editor…
or, just tap New Note before entering any text to jump right into the full note editor

How to Set a Default Type in One of Your Springpad Notebooks

With the recent update to Springpad, we introduced the new smart add bar. One of the cooler features of the add bar is the ability to set a default data type that you’d like to save to each of your notebooks. This is useful for those of you who like to have a task notebook, a note notebook, a bookmark notebook, a restaurant notebook, a recipe notebook… you get the idea!

Here’s how:

Open one of your Springpad notebooks
To the left of the add bar, tap on the little + to see your data type options

On the web: you’ll find the add bar at the top right corner of a notebook
On the mobile apps: hit the + at the bottom of the screen to bring up the add bar

Scroll down and choose a data type

Now, that type will be set as the default add type for that notebook – and that setting will sync across all of the Springpad apps that you use.

Recent Improvements to Springpad include Notebook Filtering and Easier Creation of Notes

In the last few weeks since the launch of the new Springpad, we’ve continued to add improvements that make Springpad easier for you to use. Since the most recent updates from Jeff, we’ve made many more updates to all of our apps that both address bugs and also introduce new features.

Here are some of the highlights…

Filter your notebooks
Available now on web, coming to mobile apps soon
Now that you can categorize your Springpad notebooks with Categories and Tags, we’ve also given you the ability to filter which notebooks you see on your My Notebooks home screen. Filter your current view to show just your notebooks that are Public, Private, being Collaborated on, are Only Yours, or are marked with certain categories or tags.

Enter a new note in fewer steps
Available now on web, coming to iOS with v3.0.2, and soon to Android
We’re constantly working on making it simpler to save new things to Springpad. This includes removing steps! Now, it’s easier to enter a note.

On the web: When you create a note, task or checklist in the smart bar, you’ll now be taken into the full-page editable view of the new item so you can immediately enter more details.
On the mobile apps: When you have the smart bar type selector on Note, you’ll have the option to either type in a quick note or tap New Note to quickly jump into the full-page editable view.

Simplified attaching, viewing and removing photos and files
Available now on web
We’ve made it simpler to attach photos and other media to your items in Springpad. You’ll find these options in the drop-down menu, or you can hit the big + below an existing photo. We’ve also updated the media “drawer” below the main image to always be open.

And once you attach a photo to an item, it’s now easier to control it. When you select a photo, then mouse-over the large version of it, you’ll see controls in the top right corners. These allow you to set the image as the item’s thumbnail, open a full-page version of the image in a new browser tab or delete the image.

Filter your activity to show only comments
Available now on web, coming to mobile apps soon
Particularly useful to those of you who collaborate on a notebook with a friend, you can now filter the activity feed on an item to see only the comments. Once you choose this filter on one item, it will also be your default filter when you view other items.

On the web:

Displayed a list of who’s following a public notebook
Added comment counts to thumbnail & detail view
Updated keyboard shortcuts
Fixed checklist strikethrough to display real-time
Ensured that backups include newly-added photos
Repaired hidden saved filters that weren’t showing up in All My Stuff
Corrected many display issues in IE 8 & IE 9

On the Android app (v3.0.6):

Display more characters of Notebook titles on My Notebooks view
Fixed sync issues
Display full text of recipes
Show line breaks in recipe & task descriptions
Show bookmark descriptions
Many checklist fixes
Made smart bar save the type of item you are trying to add by notebook
Allow app to save All My Stuff as last viewed & show that on re-open

General data integrity:

Fixed issues with item thumbnails not displaying
Restored any missing attached photos and files
Fixed issues with emailing a url to Springpad
Allow audio notes recorded on mobile apps to be played on the web

And coming soon on the iOS app (v3.0.2 is awaiting approval from Apple):

Made comments editable & deletable
Added back ability to hide completed tasks
Fixed hide/show completed in checklists
Allow certain viewable attached files to be opened

How to add Categories and Tags to your Springpad Notebooks

With the recent update to Springpad, you can now categorize the things you save at the notebook level – using both Categories and Tags.

Categories are our suggestions for how to organize your notebooks. Each notebook can only be in one category. Also, if you choose to make your notebooks public, they will be available to be discovered by other users in the categories in the Explore section of Springpad.

Tags are your own flexible way to organize your notebooks. Each notebook can have many tags. We’ve seen that communities of users are beginning to create an publish their notebooks around certain tags, like #kids,#apps, #paleo and #desserts

Here’s how:
The following steps are the same on all of the Springpad apps.

When you first create a new notebook, you’ll be able to add a category and also as many tags as you like.
If you’d like to categorize an existing notebook, just open the notebook’s settings to add or remove Categories and Tags.

How to control the privacy of your stuff in Springpad

With the recent update to Springpad, privacy is now controlled at the notebook level. So, once you create a notebook you can set it to be public or private, then all of its contents will also be public or private based on that setting. That means that if you wish to share an item or a set of items with the public or you wish to collaborate on them with a certain group of people, you must first add them to a notebook.

To quickly see the privacy settings of all of your notebooks, go to My Notebooks in any of the apps. The private notebooks will have a little lock on their cover, indicating that they are private.

Here’s how to set the privacy of a notebook:

On the web: Open the notebook and click on the little lock to the right of the notebook’s title
On the iPhone and iPad apps: Open a notebook and tap the little heads at the top of the notebook
On the Android app: Open the notebook and click on the little lock to the right of the notebook’s title

Privacy FAQ:

If an item is not filed in any of your notebooks, then it is private. You alone can access it in All My Stuff.
An item can be in both a public notebook and a private notebook. In this case, the item is publicly available via the public notebook.
When you add a comment to an item on the web app, you have the option of choosing to show that comment in all notebooks, or just in the current notebook. This allows you to add a comment to an item in a private notebook, keeping the comment out any public notebooks that the item may also be in.

How to change the display of your stuff in the Springpad web app

When you are viewing one of your Springpad notebooks, you can toggle the size of the your items to give yourself a different view.

Here’s how:

Open a notebook on springpad.com
In the top right corner of the notebook, click on one of the little squares to change the view of the notebook’s contents: list, detail or gallery
Choose one of the sort options from the drop-down menu

If you’d like your notebook to always be set to a certain view, you can control that in the notebook’s settings.

Here’s how:

Open a notebook on springpad.com
Select Settings (at the bottom of the left-hand navigation), then select Navigation
Choose your desired sort and view for each piece of your notebook’s navigation

The next time you open the notebook, it will be returned to the “Starting View”. These settings will be applied on the web, iPhone, iPad and Android apps

How to add a quick note to Springpad

With the new smart add bar, we’ve made it super simple to add a note to Springpad.

Here’s how:

Log in to your Springpad app
Open a notebook
On the web or on your tablet, go to the white box at the top of the notebook
On your iPhone or Android phone, hit + at the bottom of the notebook
Type in the note that you want to save
Select “Create a note titled…”
Once the note is created, you can open it up and add more details
